Dipole question/opinions

Thinking of hanging a 160m dipole but to string it straight I would need to use a phone pole to support the south end. Never mind the permission to use the pole...that is covered ;) I think I could filter any RF in the phone line to mine or the neighbors house if needed(there is just the two of us out here in the boonies). I will normally be running 100w or less but may at times run up to a KW. Any other problems with stringing it this way?

Hook948,
Ought'a work. Considering that it isn't going to be even close to optimal as far as height is conserned ('less them poles are a lot taller than I'd guess), I figure it'll work as good as most people's 160 meter antennas do. Another option would be to place the center at the pole and run the legs parallel to the tracks, just an option, certainly not 'better', but who knows. Things running 90 degrees to each other tend to have less interaction than if they are parallel. Then again, feeding it with openwire feedlines through a tuner would mean using it on any frequency, not just 160. The gain, doing that, would increase as the frequency does (don't expect much though).

The first sentence answers your question. The rest is just speculation.

Thanks Doc. Yes the pole is only about 35ft but I guess it will be a little better than it laying on the ground. Make it easier to Mow the grass also  I will be using a short run(40-50ft) of 600 ohm open wire into a Ameritron ATR-30 tuner for all bands. The ice storm last week knocked out a bunch of small limbs and any remaining leaves out of the way so stringing the wire through the trees will be a bit easier. Catch ya on HF next month :D

Hey Hook948, I am planning on putting up a 160 dipole also. The ice storm broke my 75 meter wire off at the apex. I can only have one big dipole up at a time so I thought I would replace it with a 160m dipole. It's been a few years since I have been on that band maybe we will make contact.

I have made up my mind on what I am going to put up. A 160m half wave fed with 450ohm ladder line to a switchable 1:1 / 1:4 balun (it's something new MFJ is making) then over to coax to the tuner, I am not going to run a amp. Good luck with your project.

Thanks Ken. I just got through shooting some string through the trees so I can pull the wire when ready. I talked with Pat and he is going to come over with his climbing gear and install the pulley at the top of the phone pole for me. :D In return, I'll go over to his place and help him string up his antenna.

I don't have a 144 / 440 rig at this time. My wife and I use 27.405 AM and looks like the water has draind out of my 75m antenna, I hang around 3960 - 3970.
