Hi Everyone,
I have an HR2510 that belongs to a radio guy in my area. The complaint was that it was working and then...it wasn't. When I opened it up Cap C-119 had blown open. It looked like carpet fibers were sticking out of the top of it. I did a complete recap (not the easiest radio to do) and I needed to rewind L124 as one of the legs broke when trying to remove the glue thanks Rogerbird1 for the tips). It receives fine and it does transmit about an 1/8th of a watt but that's it. The radio was modded to have variable power on the RF Gain control. The driver and final did test ok.

Ant thoughts?

The recap didn't fail really the problem lies in when the radio Quit Working - is because the cap (or caps) failed.

Many times, the cap failure causes a dead short - when that happens the radio really needs to be blown-out and/or vacuumed and literally shook out, to remove the foil shrapnel the caps can leave in there as shredded evidence.

Your "fuzz" carpet fibers are a keyword that the capacitor leaked, and you'll need to continuity check the foil TRACE that capacitor uses - to see if the caps caused a dead short on the foil trace blowing it open like a fuse.

As a closeout to this post the radio is now working. After another bout with Covid and a tough recovery I finally spent some time at the bench and I found a problem with the L124 coil that I rewound and 1 other coil. The glue sure did cause a problem initally. The solution for me was to get a second 2510 that I could compare the coils to. I also was able to trace the signal from the pre driver through the driver with the scope and compare it to the the working 2510. The signal was not being amplified to the final. I had to make the repair to the second coil and it now transmits fine.

The owner is happy to get it back and was so greatful that he understood the delay due to some health issues.

Thanks everyone!!
