Sniper take a hard look at the Yeasu 857/897 radios if you are after an all in one rig..I hear alot of those on the air in my area and when I am on HF hitting some of the long range stuff,..personally I like the sound of those rigs on the air, they are compact to.... I would advise getting an...

    Predator 10-K antenna

The Predator 10-K was made for CB ...but it would work great on 10 meters, just cut the stinger a bit shorter and you are good to go

    Ham vs CB

On the VHF/UHF bands depending on your area there are a fair number of people on the radio. There is a good number of repeaters in my area and some of them are pretty busy, others are pretty quiet depending on the time of the day. There are the regular people that get on a certain frequency or...

    Suggestions for a beginner

Hey Nick !! Welcome to the board! I would have to say keep it simple. Personally I would stay with the brands of radios that have been around for a while,Kenwood,Icom,Yeasu and Alinco. All of these brands for the most part have had a decent record of putting out well made radios that perform...

    VHF bang for buck

Depends on if you have a ham radio license or not..... If you have a ham radio license I would say take a hard look at the Yaesu FT 2900 ..I have two of them, one in mobile and one in the house, and they are tough little radios Outside of that I am not sure...

New guy. No idea what I'm doing!!!

If that radio will tune to those frequencies yes you can listen to them...as long as they dont scramble their transmissions or use digital Look at the book for that radio and see where it will receive at,if it is outside of the 2 meter and the 440 mhz ham radio bands it will make a nice...

New guy. No idea what I'm doing!!!

What you got is a duel band handheld ham radio ( aka amateur radio ) that thing WILL transmit .......unless you have a ham radio license you can find yourself in ALOT of trouble talking on it.. But on the bright side..you now have a reason to get your ham radio license :) I have never...

    Get this before it's gone!

Those are some great radios,I had one back in the early 90s and loved it !!( and it was stable after adding a channel kit) But 300$ for it?? I guess it is well worth it to someone

    Music on 166.2500

Interesting .....have no idea really The first thing that comes to mind here is that might have been a point to point system for a radio station. In my area there are a few radio stations with small towers and directional antennas pointing to an area that has several very tall...

    Neat md or ruined classic?

That thing is a trashed classic to say the least....if it were 100% orginal it might be worth close to that to the right person As far as myself goes that thing is any old hacked up radio in a classic case What a waste of a good case

New HAM with lots of questions....

For local contacts try 2 meters and 70 CM bands, there are usually repeaters in the area that people hang out on,contacts can range out to about 70 miles or so statewide/regional contacts 160,80 and 40 meters are a good place to start..I personally like 80 meters, can get contacts from local...

Will this be ok Newbie Q

I am not sure if the tuner will load up an antenna outside of the ham bands( I am sure someone in the know will chime in )...for listening the tuner wont make enough difference to be really noticed, just be sure to tune the antenna for 11 meters and leave the tuner turned off

low pass filter or low swr?

If it were me I would run the filter in line just for peace of mind. But if you are not having any known issues with it not in line the choice is yours. The difference in SWR readings is nothing to be concerned with.if the SWR had jumped to over a 2:1 then it would be time to start looking...
