3rd time in 20 years I had to replace the coax assembly. What a piece of crap at $20 a pop. Just last week the plastic that supports the locking lugs cracked from the cold I guess, so the antenna and coil were wobbling around.
As I was going from SSB to Am the scope picture would change and to correct I had to use different resister values, so with the potentiometer its an easy fix. I built a few different ones using toroid's and this one was the best, similar to the Bird RF sampler I borrowed.
You can find a good export radio for about $300 pushing 80 watts or so. More money for higher output! A 148 is a great 30 year old radio, by the time you have it recapped aligned, etc it will cost you about $500 for 4 watts output. Unless you are the tech, its cheaper to get the export. If you...
I do something similar, also I put toroid's on most of my longer speaker cables, mic cables and coax. Also don't daisy chain you grounds, try to run all grounds separate to a common bus which then Leeds to the outside ground.
I always heard grounding material should be braid or flat copper strap otherwise your ground could turn into an antenna or ground loop. Grounding the tower to the mains ground is a building code item in some states.
The best thing for starters is to ask people who know you how you sound over the air. Hopefully the will helpful on getting your settings correct. The SM 58 mic is good, but the Heil 781 is better, it's up to you if you want to spend $150.
Old Crow is right a $50 Beringer is not the best choice, Alesis and Beringer make better models around $125 or $75 used with a 3 channel range. This will work better with the mid range on both transmit and receive. My 802 is collecting dust, hope this helps.
Well if conditions are bad, I can't get out at all no matter what I do. My antennas are too low down. Using the 802 I had too many jacks and wires hanging around. With the 781 I just use the mixer settings in the receiver.
Most of these come from china for $4 (some cb shops charge you $40 to add this option) but unfortunately you have to drill out the knob. One ass even made a video with showing off the wobbly know as he turns it. LOL
