I have found the Workman DM507 microphones work well with everything I have tried them on. I don't have a 980, but for any Cobra 148/Grant XL/Washington radio they have been as good as anything else.

At 27 feet the difference between "heliax" and rg8x is only in money spent. Save the cash for a future beam.
