    Why do people...

Most of what I am currently using is old stuff: Realistic TRC 490 Navaho SSB base purchased in 1981; Uniden PC 122 from the 90s; Cobra 148 GTL made in 1992; and a Cherokee AH 100 w/t that is about 25 years old. I ran a 1977 Johnson 4740 SSB mobile as my base until it died. I'll probably run...

leave it up or take it down

I was in Madrid, Alabama. Imagine my shock to find that no one in Madrid spoke Spanish! Latest advisory shows Ian rapidly intensifying and projected to hit Category 4 strength. Though the Keys are no longer considered a potential landfall point, we are being advised of possible flooding...

leave it up or take it down

And here I thought London was in Kentucky. Go figure.

leave it up or take it down

I know. And I thought Sydney was in Australia!

leave it up or take it down

Down here in the Keys, there's no thinking twice about it. Unless this storm stays more to the west - like two of the models predict - the antenna is coming down tomorrow.

    Walkie Talkie Base Station

I actually keep 3 CB walkie talkies in the boat: a Cherokee AH-100, a Realistic TRC 216 and a President Randy II. With appliances and marine electronics off, the Cherokee is a blast for shooting skip. It also gets pretty good range for talking house to boat and reaching any locals (very few)...

    Favorite fiberglass antenna?

I've got an A99 up at one location and an IMAX 2000 up at the other. No fiberglass antenna of mine goes up unless it is wrapped in plastic wiring loom. The loom takes the beating of the UV rays, not the antenna. That's why my 1/2 wave fiberglass Radio Shack Archer Crossbow (made by...

    11 meter is very quiet?

I get that others have a different take, but I enjoy the challenge of achieving as much as possible within "the rules". In over 4 decades of operating on CB, I've never once operated with more than the legal 4 watts on AM and 12 on SSB. Here in the Keys, I've talked to Hawaii with my Cherokee...

    11 meter is very quiet?

I was driving through Miami on the way home the other day and stumbled across a bunch of guys on AM 10 talking skip. They all were talking about how much power they were running. One guy mentioned he was at 3700 watts. Another was running 2400. I think the lowest I heard was 800 watts. They...

    11 meter is very quiet?

I just don't think you need to go above 27.405. I understand there's an international crowd that hangs around 27.555 and other points above the legal 40. But honestly folks, CB/GRS just does not have the volume it did in the 70s and 80s. With a little effort you can usually QSY off of LSB 38...

    Walkie Talkie Base Station

I've got three. I bought the first one at a Radio Shack in Tallahassee, FL in the mid-80s. It worked great. I bought a second one off of Ebay dirt cheap because the antenna was broken. With a pile of spares in my closet, the radio went on-line about an hour after it came in the mail. Third...

    Walkie Talkie Base Station

Anyone using a walkie talkie as their base unit? The Cherokee AH-100 in my photo frequently gets used in that capacity with a little Radio Shack headphone mic set. I've also used my Realistic TRC 234s, 226s and 216s as base units. I've got an old Turner +3 base mic wired up so that I can plug...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Oh, no! That would be illegal. Next, we'll have people running more than 4 watts and there will surely be chaos.

    11 meter is very quiet?

You should have sent them all to LSB 16. It would have gotten them off your case and revived the old, recognized SSB hailing channel for CB/GRS. We really need to do this anyways to ease the pressure on LSB 38 when the skip starts rolling. Mamma mia!

    Reclaim LSB 16

LSB 16 - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8th and SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9th It looks like enough of us are committed to trying to revive LSB 16. Let's commit to making the effort over the week-end covering Saturday, October 8th and Sunday, October 9th. Start making your DX call-outs at noon eastern each day...

    Better than average SSB radio

My main radio, which you see in my picture is an old Uniden PC122. It is about 30 years old. My number 2 radio, which is also in the picture is a Cherokee AH 100 AM/SSB walkie talkie. It is about 20 years old. The other radio I use a lot for a base is a 1981 production Realistic TRC 490. I...

    Reclaim LSB 16

I'm aiming for the week-end of October 7th and 8th. That will give all of us here time to get the word out. I'll have college or pro football on the t.v. and LSB 16 on the CB. That way me and anyone else trying this can stay entertained regardless. The games start at noon so we can aim to...

    Reclaim LSB 16

I'm still of the mindset that getting some traffic back on LSB 16 would be a good thing. The pile up on LSB 38 gets out of control. I oftentimes will QSY folks over to LSB 39, LSB 37 or LSB 36, but even those can get busy when the skip is rolling. I'm toying with the idea of picking a...

    Reclaim LSB 16

I kept picking up a dispatcher on AM 16 who was speaking Spanish with a Mexican accent. There occasionally was other AM traffic, but I got no bites on my LSB 16 efforts.
