After you get your coil and whip-length where you need it, you might think about replacing the Wilson gumdrop with something of better quality/conductivity. Had a couple of those cause issues. Plenty of better mounts out there.

At some point you'll want to check what firmware version your rig shipped with versus the most current version on the Yaesu website. I've updated mine once since I received it and the DNR and a few other functions were improved quite a bit.

Mr. LSB,
I don't think you'll be sorry for choosing the 710. I also suffer with man-made noise (QRM) of varying levels and the filters, etc, have made it easier to deal with and much more pleasant audio.
I have no doubt you will make it through the Tech Exam, it's not that difficult with a bit...
I do not recommend modifying any Amateur radio for use on 11m, but if you intend to get your ticket and play on the adult bands my opinion is GET THE 710!!!!!! I think the 710 and the 7300 are very close to each other in TX performance and bells and whistles, but the 710 is head and shoulders...

You are a homebrewer R-man, I've read your threads on the verticals you've made. Wire antennas for HF are very make-able and definitely less $$.........

The DNR issue was resolved in my radio with the first firmware update, works quite well now.
I probably should have said that the only mode I operate in is phone and that I don't own an amp. If mine has issues with other mode operations I don't know about it, and frankly my dear.........

Yes, mine is the AESS model, with both the internal and external speakers. Yes I use both speakers and it sounds good, very "full" sounding when compared to a single speaker.

I don't have both sir, but I can tell you from my experience that the FT-710 is a very nice rig. Excellent receive with very effective and easily adjusted filtering. Excellent transmit audio. Menus are simple to get to and change. Nice spectrum scope/waterfall display. An external display...
You also might want to go ahead and get a FCC-required FRN number on their website. You'll need it to get signed up for any licensing exams either online or in-person.
7 3 and good luck
