What radio and meter are you using? My Icom and Yeasu will both show an AM carrier, then drop back when you modulate if the meter is reading RMS.

Agreed. On a good day I talk to my locals within a 50 mile radius on ssb with 20 watts and also skip 600 miles away. On a bad day I've had to run 180 watts just to be heard 30 miles away.

Made several contacts this morning to Germany, England, and Ireland. Though all were from 27.415 lsb to 27.585 lsb. I'll try again later and see what happens. If nothing else I'll be on 27.535 lsb this evening talking to my locals.
