Yesterday, conditions were great for Europe. I QSO'd a station in Frankfurt, Germany. A few minutes later, I communicated with another in Hamburg. Made me feel like having a cookout.

I suddenly have a problem with my TenTec 544. When I key up, my meters all drop to zero. I suspect that it is a ground issue, because when I unscrew the antenna connector (shield only), my receive increases. However that only takes care of the receive. When I key up, the swr/s meter drops down...

This guy needs to be taken care of.

I was picking up litter around the property when a circa 1930 bi-plane flew over. This was not out of the ordinary, as there is a small airfield a quarter of a mile away, which has many old small planes. The cool thing was, that as I was watching it ascend, something flew out of it's open...

Bill Blount: WARV in RI is making progress from the flood. The station is now back to Full power and sounds great! (We're using the transmitter that was flooded...we cleaned it and dried it out....now it works again. Nautel transmitters are great!)

I connect the PL259 from my G5RV antenna to the radio and it receives well with only the pin connected, but as soon as I screw on the shield the reception decreases? Is there a short somewhere in the lead or the ladder line, or is the balun bad, or what? Any thoughts?:confused1:

Now I'm cookin'!:wink: Still gotta fully study the owner's manual and learn to properly operate it. Fortunately the friend who "GAVE" it to me has been a HAM for 40 years and is my source for info. BTW, this radio is pristine!

I'm about to get my first HF Radio (TenTec Triton IV, mod 544). It's supposed to be ok with just about any antenna accompanied by an antenna tuner. Anyone ever heard of a Maco 103C (3 element beam) being used for HF? The darn thing is already up on the house, rotator and all and it's only less...

First I'm taking the Technician exam and when I pass that, I can immediately take the General. I've been passing the practice exams, so I'm optimistic. I'm going to wait a little while and study some more though, before I take the Extra exam.

Sure does make the learning easier. I study the ARRL Manual on my breaks at work, then use the hamtestonline program at night. I'm already at 25% for the General Class Exam.:thumbup1:

The equations and formulas in the General Class Handbook are tough for me. Any tips?:confused1:
