Aggravating Problems with my Mega Coilys

I wasn't going to post my feelings about Coily's antennas, but I feel I must.

I have boasted greatly about the quality of Coily's new Mega antennas, and how well they perform. They do look bitchin and perform superbly. But, I have been having serious problems with the threads in the aluminum shaft that hold the set screws and the 3/8" mounting stud at the bottom stripping. I have had to drill new holes and tap them for new set screws due to the aluminum stripping. I have also had to drill and tap a hole in the side where the 3/8" mounting stud is located to install a set screw to hold the stud in place due to the threads in the aluminum stripping. I don't know if it is just too soft an aluminum, but this has been extremely aggrivating to say the least. I have to do alot of slip seating with these antennas and constantly have to readjust the stinger length because of different vehicle mounting. Maybe the constant loosening and retightening of the studs has caused the stripping, but I don't thinks so, the aluminum should be durable enough to withstand this. This post is not a cut or dig at Coily, just some flaws "as I see it" in the aluminum being used )maybe too soft?) Maybe not. But I haven't had this problems with the Predator 10k's stripping. Also, the Megas are one solid piece - so ya' can't change the bad part out for another.

Just my opinion, Hossless

Hey you can send them back if you have a problem just like i told you to do and i will fix them or replace them for free i can fix them just because they are a welded unit does not mean they can't be fixed they have a 5 year warranty!! You don't have to overtighten the setscrews. The antennas are 6061-t6 top to bottom.Hossless i told you to send it back and i would fix it,I also remember asking you not to make that antenna a mess for me It sounds like you made a mess but i will still fix it for you I will toughen it up .

Dan, my intention wasn't to try and cause you or your business any trouble. I know you said you would take care of the problem, but unfortunately I have had the same problem with both the drive around and the short trucker. I have put longer set screws, (about 3 times the length of the stock ones) and haven't had any more problems with stripping the threads. I do appreciate the the fact that you DO stand behind your products though. I guess I was way off about the soft aluminium, (don't know squat about aluminium). I did fix the problems, (not in the cleanest manner), but I did take care of it myself - didn't want to be without my ears for too long. Anyway, I just wanted to voice my opinion and experience with a product, and I hope in the process of doing so I didn't piss anyone off too much... Especially you Dan.

There is no question, I love the way my Coily's look and perform. I am glad I could start a little dialogue on the problems I have had with them. I really think a set screw at the bottom of the antenna going into the 3/8" mounting stud would be a great improvement. Also, much longer stinger set screws (about 3 times the current length) would hold up to alot of set screw "cranking". Some of us big fellers don't know our own strength!
