Spent most of the day changing around and re-arranging antennas here.
Got my hands on another Shakespeare Super Big Stick, put it up on a section of 10' heavy gauge galvanized fence post, putting the bottom of the antenna approx 18 feet off the ground. A single ground wire connected to a ground rod next to the garage.
Running it to my MFJ-949C I was able to tune it up almost flat on 10 meters. About a 2:1 on 12 and 15 meters, not so good on 17 meters, and a 1.5:1 on 20 meters. On 20m it certainly does not work as well as my dipole, but I was able to check into the Maritime Mobile Service Net on it, and got a good signal report, and that was with marginal conditions.
This certianly won't be my main 20 meter antenna, but it's nice to know I can use it as a back up if I ever need to...

Back to 10 meters, this evening I was hearing a round table discussion down in Florida for a good 45 minutes, tried to make contact, but these guys were pretty quick on the key, and didn't give me any openings to break into the conversation. Then the conditions changed and I lost them altogether. Scanning the band, I hears a couple more Florida stations, but with the conditions going bad, they were just above the noise level, so I didn't bother trying to call them.....

At least I know this thing works, and will hold me over until I can buy a decent multi band Hustler, or some other vertical......

Did I ever tell y'all my Shakespeare Big Stick story?

Ah what the hell, they're ain't nothing else going on and Cajun Invader is paying me by the word (out of the membership dues account) to stay off his back so......

Back in the 70's they had these Big Sticks. We didn't think much of them, all aluminum antennas were still made in the good ol' USA, so you were pretty much a chump if you weren't running a Penetrator 5/8 or a Starduster or a Avanti chicken basket looking thing...oh yeah...Astroplane. So me and some of the guys.....okay it was me....came up with the idea to ah....help....yeah that's it...help our struggling black friend CB'ers out there in that mean ol' southern big city. So WE figured we should paint the white fiberglass sheathed Big Sticks black, rename it the Black Shaft, claim that they have 9.9 db gain (worked for Antron) double the price and sell them to the black contingent of our big friendly radio family. Them things sold like goose grease to Col. Sanders. Made a lot of money for back then. But being stupid and lazy and white, I blew it all on Boones Farm Strawberry Hill

Weasel....

Back in my CB days, and again being on the coast, there were a handful of guys that had Astroplanes, and the odd 5/8 wave aluminum ground plane arrangement....(Those being used by the guys running hot)....but the vast majority of CB'ers with base stations had a big ole white Shakespeare Big Stick strapped to their chimney, or TV tower. It was the antenna of choice for the seashore.
We learned early in the game to coat them with 3 or 4 layers of Collinite's Insulator wax before putting them up, and that helped to keep the fiberglass from breaking down due to UV rays.
I lived on the bay front on a low street that would flood with tidal water all the time, having my Big Stick grounded directly into the Great Egg Harbor Bay was as good as running an extra 100 watts at high tide.....:D

These things just worked here, they were designed to work over water, and we were always over water in one form or another being on a barrier island.
Now days I live a couple miles inland, but I'm still on a penninsula that's surrounded by river mouths and bays, so the water might not work for me as well as it did in the old days, but it still has a positive effect on my signal, especially for DX'ing......

OK....how much does Cajun Invader owe me for this post......:D

Oh he's only paying ME for posting. You'll have to extort....er...I mean...work out your own deal.

Yes yes good good I'm not really down on "Big Sticks" ... > snicker < The story was a joke.

I DID however really have the idea to repaint and rename and resell to the mentioned clientele, but it was just a joke amongst us channel monkeys of the day.

Enjoy !

good idea weasle . im gonna paint some a high-gloss brown (so they look wet) and sell them to mexicans . should i call it the brown bomber .. or .. the mexi-can . the mexi-can get out !!

Hmmmm thinking...thinking

Gentlemen! Gentlemen! we must do something to save our phoney baloney jobs!

Make the brown one the Beaner Pole...no ...wait, too long. Just Bean Pole

Yellow one to the Asians? So we are going to import Big Sticks & remarket them back to China and make a goodly profit on our hard sweat and blood? Nah it'll never work. They make their own Rice Rods and sell them locally for the equivalent of $1.298

Now the Amerinds are good sports. Call that one the Spirit Stick. Only market it in reservation areas that have oil or casinos. All the others spend their dough on firewater.

You guys were slow, you could have painted them grey, black or khaki and sold them to the IRA as sam missiles.

Not as if your average Irishman would notice the difference as long as you put some blue fusepaper in the end.

ANTENNA COLORS! }:>)

Well I had the idea that I would REPAINT the ANTRON 99(3 piece antenna). The TOP will be RED(red cap on top already),middle section stays WHITE,& bottom section gets a nice BLUE coating. Then I will call them the USA or the "PATRIOT" EDITION.ONLY cost $10 more for the PATRIOTIC paint job over the PLAIN WHITE model. This would NOT work with those 4 piece antennas just the THREE PIECE ones.NOTHING "PRETTIER" than the BEAUTIFUL "RED,WHITE,& BLUE! }:>) Now I went & let ANOTHER money making idea out of the bag! EVERYBODY knows CBers are VERY PATRIOTIC people so they would sell like BISKETS & GRAVY at a Weight Watchers meeting!

God bless,
SIX-SHOOTER
