Richard at 8451 tuned up a 2950DX for me last year and did a fine job at a decent price! I think you'll be happy if you use him! Give him a call!

Richard has done about 12 different radios for me and 2 amps, he is VERY VERY dedicated to detail AND customer service. He will talk your ear off on the phone if you wish or will keep it short and sweet. Modified radios are no problem call him on the phone!

I wish all people and business' had the pride he takes with his repairs

This sounds a little low...I have three of these and at a 3 watt Dk they will swing to 150. With a 10 DK I am seeing an easy 185-90, at full throttle they will swing to 215 +/-
This is on SSB - AM is around 150 with swing.

"Does 25 watt deadkey and 160 watt swing sound about right for a 2970dx?"

peak-to-carrier should be 4:1 for best results. 40 watts carrier to 160 pep would be ideal yield for a pair of 2290's on am. total modulated pep output should not exceed 6 db. above the unmodulated carrier. the only exception is when driving an external amplifier, when a higher peak-to-carrier is required from the exciter to achieve 4:1 output levels from the amplifier.

the figures that dxman mention represent excessive peak-to-carrier ratios and cause the transmitter to operate in DSBSC mode. (double-sideband with suppressed-carrier) this is not true am mode operation and whether other operators are able to discern it or not, the resultant signal is overmodulated and distorted. on the other hand, the high power figures quoted by FL Native represent inadequate peak-to-carrier levels and severely restricted modulation levels in the rf envelope. (<100%)

Yes, it probably would be overmodulated, but I was just saying what the radio would do, but I don't run it with that much swing on AM. Carrier is set at around 20-25 and mic gain turned down so as to only do about 100 watts.
Runs and sounds like a radio from BV!

the 40/160 figures i mentioned in my previous post would be with the tx power and mic gain controls in their fully clockwise positions. the amc (assuming it hasn't been disabled) should be adjusted to hold average pep at 160 while speaking into the microphone in a normal voice. if you're only seeing 150 then 150/4 = 37.50 watts. for those who do not own a good scope, adhering to this 4:1 peak-to-carrier guideline is as close as you can come to a properly adjusted am transmitter. again, this only applies to peak-envelope-power measurements.
