Ok, you're at a CB break with all your buddies and you won the door prize. The prize is your choice of the following meters. You don't currently own a meter and you are so excited that you get to choose one. Which 1 would you choose for your prize?

If your're going to spend that much money on one of those questionably reliable CB meters why not get an Autek WM-1 for $159.00 and make someone happy?? Just sayin..

Astatic 700 taking the lead, its a good meter with a very very big meter face, tough to decipher at first but once you get used to it offers a lot of resolution, too bad no headphone monitor function on it. I have a friend with one who after one year of use, busted the meter by repeatedly pegged the meter accidentally with the 800 watts that he normally operated at. He since sold it for scrap. Good meter that lasted a year of abuse.

    You'd be surprised

You'd be surprised, in the westside they happen in various cities probably more often than competitions...

    Autek and such

Autek and Palstar is over the price range by some dollars. I wanted to limit this to fully featured affordable meters. The autek is an SWR type meter designed to focus on SWR and power and nothing else in terms of station monitoring such as Modulation percentage. With the Autek you would use the peak power readings to determine power over carrier, which requires some math. I don't doubt its usefullness and hear a lot of good things about this meter, but again, trying to stay with street price of around $110, putting the Autek about 45% or roughly $50 over the budget and similar on the Palstar.

Let me guess...he replaced it with a Dosy and everything has been hunkydory since.

    Daiwa CN101L - $95
    Ameritron AWM20 $90

Either of the above meters come in below your $110 street price and IMO more reliable than a Dosy. No they don't have an audio monitoring feature, but if you're so concerned with how you sound all the time hook up your radio to a dummy load, plug a set of headphones into the MONI jack and have at it. :D

If I were buying one, those listed are not what I would pick. But, you did say giving away at a CB break. So, I picked up the Astatic 3 meter. Your average CB guy would be ecstatic with the Astatic. :)

btw we have had CB breaks in Dallas and Wichita Falls over the last couple of years. Not like the old days, but still pretty cool.

    analysis

More people have voted for a specific meter than those who voted for none. This tells me that meters in this range are viable for more cbers than not. It also tells me that there are quite a few cbers that think that amateur level meters are the way to go and sets them apart from your average cber.

I also observe that many prefer the Astatic over the Workman model which is the same as the Astatic but also includes a non-amplified audio monitor jack (diode detector for audio), from what I was told.

I've done a lot of research on meters in this price range to compare functionality, reliability, ease of use, and even fun to use and although there is no perfect meter in this price range that gives everything that I want, it is interesting to know what others like.
