Looking for someone to work on my 2x4-1000 amps

I have two of them and would like to have them looked at and checked
out maybe 160 added to them.
Maybe a stepstart added to the one that does not have one.

I'm really trying to understand what you are talking about. Do you have two 2x4 amplifiers you need looked at? What does the 1000 amps have to do with it? And you want to add 160 watts er amps??? Makes no sense.

4-1000 amplifiers that have two 4-1000 tubes in them.
I would like to have 160 meters added to them too if possible.
That is what I mean by the 1000amps 9C1driver.

No problem understanding what he wanted. 2X4-1000's, great amp!! I had a single one and it was awesome especially with 6000 volts on the plate.

Haven't yet. But found the Amp Lady on the east coast of Florida that
might be able to help me when she gets some time.
Her new place she moved to here in Florida is up on second floor and
I can lift these things to get them up there. She said she could come
over to my home and fix them there but needs to get some time.
When I get them fixed up will let you know how it went and what she charged
for doing it.

When I first replied to this thread, I did not realize that it was almost a year old.

The thing about 4-1000 amplifiers is that they are BIG, the tube needs 4000+ volts on the plate and the filament requirements are great. I worked on a couple a few years back and the thing that strikes me most is the need for huge components.

IMHO, the idea of multi-banding an amp that was designed and constructed with a 4-1000 for single band operation really needs to be thought out well by the owner and the person committing themselves to take on this project.

You will need band switching components rated at 4000+ volts, multiple tank coils, fixed or vacuum tuners and input tuning for each band also. That's a lot of parts and effort to install them; is there enough room or will the whole thing need to be repackaged?

Expect to pay money in advance, come out of your pocket with big money for parts, have a long wait and, when it's delivered, expect to hear occasional pops and snaps when you key it down.

Rhetorical question: Why don't you take it back to the person who built it?

Why would you expect to hear occasional pops and snaps when you key it? If done properly there should be no arcing whatsoever and with a 4-1000 after the first pop or snap I highly doubt there would be another one to follow.

Let's just say that, "I been there". Too many 450 volt electrolytics strung together trying to reach 5000 volts, that accounted for the snaps and for-what-ever-reason it would occasionally arc during tuning. Sounded like a .45 ACP at close range.

Now-a-days, the owner would have to take out a paid up Whole Life Insurance Policy on me before I would mess with that thing again.

Oil-filled caps are the way to go. Just be sure they're not the old ones filled with PCB's...

While I was working around a Collins 208U-3 HF amp in the 80's USAF, the HF power supply freaked under load -- it was only 35 years old at the time. There was a light show emanating from edges of the PS cabinet door what sounded like a shotgun blast.

In the end, it was fun cleaning and repairing it... carbon tracks and all...

Oh... the good old days... Collins URG equipment and those 208U-3's and 208U-10's. I miss 'em.

I also miss my BTI LK-2000 amp with a 4-1000A...
