I'm not sure about the "New" 959's, but some of the older versions of the 959s were not modifiyable for extra channels without a Viagra board. If the PLL is an MB8719, it should be completely modifiable with just switches to the PLL. If the PLL is an RCI8719, you'll need tha Viagra Board. I am also told that there are now two (2) different versions of the Viagra Board: A and B. B is plug in, and A must be soldered. I did a couple of the 1st generation 959s, with the RCI8719 chip, and the A boards, and it was a real P.I.T.A. to align, but I eventually got it. VCO needs adjustment to get it to 'lock' over the entire 120 channel range; and each individual AM/USB/LSB slug on the RADIO, LOW Band Viagra, Med Band Viagra, and HIGH band Viagra needed to be aligned on all three modes: a minimum of 16 separate alignments IF the VCO will even lock.

It was a good 3-4 hour job, including modifing the switches on the 959 to accomodate the new board(s).

NEVER again!

I owned the 959 and did the two SPST switches PLL jumper mod. It was easy to do, and took but a few minutes. It did not result in a complete set of upper and lower channels like the Viagra board will do. What was there worked well and trouble free.

Just google the channel mod for the DX959 and follow the instructions.

J33 is where the control wires are and this crude drawing of mine shows what you need to do.

This is more expensive but also the channels are all there with no missed channels.

Works great have done several of them.

I always solder the NB and ANL permanently on as that switch is used to select the high or low band.

Has a 5 kc switch also if you are one to drill holes in your radio.

A full alignment will need to be performed after the install.
