It no longer works at ft 897 on battery B otherwise works on the external source and battery A?
I would start by exchanging the battery packs. Move the "B" battery pack to the "A" position and the "A" battery in place of the "B" battery.
If the result causes the A" battery to fail and the "B" battery to now work, this tells us that one battery pack has failed.
If the same "A" battery choice continues to fail as before this means the fault is in the radio and not in one battery pack.
