Radio Shack noise filter

I was at radio shack the other day, and i saw a new item they've started carying. It's a 10 amp inline noise filter for cb's, radios, etc. It was cheap enough ($14), so I picked one up and went home to install it. I put it under my dash, as close to the radio as I could get it. I was fairly pleased with the results. It cleaned up a lot of the motor noise I was getting from my Jeep. It also got rid of the annoying turn signal clicking. I still have a very slight alternator whine, but it's not bad enough to worry about. They also have a 20amp one, which is quite a bit bigger.

Thought I'd pass that along....

There's a good chance a lot of what you are hearing is the fuel pump. My jeep made a lotta racket 'till the fuel pump went out. After I changed it things got a whole lot quieter.

Tommy, I apoligize for what I posted, you were right it was way off base. Some people, (like me ), take what you say and gather you think you are a CB god. We all say and do things differently, so I was wrong and admit it. I hope you accept my apology. I am man enough to admit my mistakes and move on. Take care and have a great day.

I already had all my stuff run straight to the battery. Part of the problem is that the jeeps are just plain noisy...and I have heard on Jeep forums that the fuel pump is part of the problem. Unfortunately, you gotta drop the gas tank to get to it. I've also inspected a lot of the body and frame grounds, and added a few of my own. In addition, I put a big CAP in between the power leads to act as a shunt right before the power enters the cab to help filter out ignition noise. The extra Rat Shack power filter did help cut down some noise coming from electrical components in the dash as well. Every little bit helps....

Moleclulo, I own a '90 Ford pickemup. This four wheeler puts out more engine, fuel pump, you name it noise of any vehicle I have owned. I have tried running straight to the battery (to no avail). I had a bud of mine install a filter inside the radio (to no avail). The noise is almost unbearable, the noise to signal ratio is worse than better. I haven't tried any of the inline filters like the one you just purchased from Radio Shack. Guess I'll have to make a trip to the Shack and give one a try.

How much of a noticeable difference did the filter really make?

Do you think it was worth the money? Do you know if the 20a filter would cut more of the noise than the 10a?

Thanks, Hossless

I noticed *some* difference...it didn't eliminate it all. I don't think you're going to notice any difference in reduction between the 10a or 20a one...you just need the right one depending on how many amps your radio draws. It was pretty inexpensive, so it's probably worth a shot. Or try Maco's homemade filter....

Hello all, I built the filter Maco recommended, and it didn't work, (well, I'm sure it worked-but not in my case). Why you ask? I now think the noise coming from the internal fuel pumps is being picked up by my antenna. After trying the filter connected to the power cord, (and it didn't do anything), I removed the antenna with the engine running and virtually all the noise was eliminated. Does this make sense to any of you???

Re: Radio Shack noise filter HEY BUTTFUZZ!!

AudioShockwave, I'll do some digging. I know this subject has been discussed before on this forum. A local around here just told me Ford had a recall regarding the fuel pump noise interference. I guess I'll give Ford a call.

Thanks, Hossless

Re: Radio Shack noise filter HEY BUTTFUZZ!!

Thanks RR, unfortunately my year/model pickup isn't listed. I'll give Ford a try anyway. Man, you are good!

Re: Radio Shack noise filter HEY BUTTFUZZ!!

Called Ford the other day, and they said it was a service bulletin, not a recall. So I'll have to fork out around $100 bucks when I'm ready to have it done. The guy I spoke to said it WOULD take care of the fuel pump noise...

I guess that's what TSB (technical service bulletin) stands for.
