i like 2 meter, ssb too but as for nets im not 1 to act like a school kid raise your hand and wait in line to answer the question. and some nets have many checkins.otherwise distance on simplex is great with oh like a gp9 at 40+ feet to bottom of antenna, ive talked 100 miles easy on 2 meters simplex on 50 watts.
and if the country goes like its headed your cellphone be worthless.
i despise yaesu but i do use a ftm 200dr hooked to my laptop and use wires x connect to the world with a tech license. plus 10 meters usb can be very interesting. but 10 metes is about same as cb but you can legally use POWER. thats my opinion. best of luck

VHF and UHF are basically line of sight as well as repeter use, there is however exceptions to that rule. There is EME, this is bouncing your signal off the moon and making contacts that way, there is Aurora bounce, bound your signal off of the Aurora borealis. There are ham satellites that you can use. There is SSB just like 11meters. However you don't get real long distance till you get on HF which is anything below 30mhz.

There are some famous hams out there, one of them being Joe Walsh, he is really into ham radio, I have talked to him many times.

Anyway there is way more to do on the ham bands then can ever be done on 11meters... Just saying..:)
Is Joe Walsh from America’s Most wanted

That's Joe Walsh WB6ACU with Bob Heil K9EID.

I've had a QSO with Bob Heil on 40 meters one night driving across Kansas but yet to catch Joe Walsh on the air.

Ham radio operators (VHF/UHF) should pay attention to enhanced radio propagation paths throughout the middle latitudes and equatorial region, a common occurrence following such events. :coffee: (y)
  • @ BJ radionut:
Had "Aurora" propagation on CW/SSB on 6m last evening. (300-700m range here) The 2m guys had lots of Ducting/TROPO between the East Coast and Gulf Coast op's, even early today.
