FatBoy 1x4 input "dead key"?

To start with, if you are not checking things into a dummy load, then the accuracy of your findings are suspect.
If you feed that amplifier a signal with a 1:4 ratio, you should see a 1:4 ratio on the amplifier's output. If you don't then I would recheck the radio you're using for that 1:4 ratio. If it really is that 1:4, and the amplifier isn't reasonably close to that, then you can certainly assume that amplifier isn't very 'linear'. Try reducing the amount of drive power (50% maybe) you are feeding the thing and check it again. Still an unreasonable result? Take a good look at that amplifier. Lots of things are 'claimed', a few of those claims are even correct,or close. Some are just plain BS. Which do you have?
- 'Doc

(The same will hold true for any amplifier, doesn't matter who makes it.)

Nothing like runnig a nice SSB radio ito a class C amp with no SSB delay. Fatboy makes a decent amp, I wish they would be more realistic in their advertised wattage claims. Thats the way the game has to be played though. Too many truck drivers believe exactly what they are told by amp builders, in the end the bigger liar wins the sale.

nothing like good quality control and giving the customer what they pay for :)

How is the guy selling them supposed to know they are going to change them?

A 1x4 was ordered, and a 1x4 was received. (not to say I wouldn't have been a little peeved if it had been 1446s!!). They also have a single switch now that is AM/OFF/SSB, and not the classic two switches for on/off and am/ssb. Both were changes he was unaware of.

The amp actually has a SSB delay...not the best design if you want to run a remote, but its still a delay.

And while its an advertising game, it doesn't mean an under-educated consumer has to believe them there numbers...;) I notice a lot of times those numbers are based on an inflated/unrealistic voltage.

The 2290 is a better choice for a drive transistor than the 2879 for the reason that the 2290 will ramp up faster than the 2879 with a lower drive input from the radio but on the other hand the 2879 will be more forgiving at higher inputs from the radio but over drive the finals in the amp.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

If I had ordered am amp with a 2290/2879 configuration I would be upset if it arrived otherwise.

Like I said...a "1x4" was ordered and a "1x4" was received.

When asked, he said it would be a 2290 driver...it arrived a 2879 (he probably doesn't even know its a 2879 driver, I just happened to notice it). Being I have seen them advertised in a 1446, 2290, and 2879 driver before; it really didn't raise any flags...it was a 1x4 with all 2879s, which seem quite common.

i was of the impression those were custom made amps . chargers product page is down ATM , but class C "amp builders" typically offer 4 pill amps with the buyers choice of driver with a very small price difference . a seller of those products should know that ....... i dont even like class c amps and i know it , LOL . it really doesnt matter though , 2290 , 1446 , 2879 .... neither is needed to drive four 2879's to their full clean power capability with any typical radio , unless your goal is to talk on more than one channel at a time .. AKA splatter and bleed . ;)

If you don't care why should I ? Well in the real world you'll have to setup the radio to work with the amp so if you've been reading what I've said then you have all the info you'll need to do that.

Yep, been listening...and thanks for the help. I will take his radio to the shop and see if there is an issue...sort of puzzling why this Uniden is so low on power...there might be something wrong with the radio as it benched fine with this amp.

We did some playing around, and to answer Doc's question; it seems linear enough? Dropping to 80 watts gets us a touch over 300, 100 yields about 400 watts, and 150 yields about 600 watts...this radio was touched by DTB, so I'm pretty sure its done correctly. It actually seems more linear than my 4x1446 box with the same 959 in front of it. This is using a Dosy meter.

And Booty, we intend to set the amp to run less than 500 watts...clean signal in, without over driving, should provide a fairly strong clean signal on even Class C. Fatboy amps don't seem to be really custom made anymore...just do a quick internet search and you can find them being pawned by several online sources...not including Charger's.

Overall, we are pleased...thanks to all for the input.

I just go back from the local tech and the driver was blown out. 35 bucks and she was fixed. 400 dead key swinging a 800 at 15.5 volts 5 watt input bird. over a G watt on the crap meters.
