I have just passed my Technician class Ham radio Saturday YEHAAAAA!!!!
Well I'd like to ask what a good 10 meter radio is so I can use it in the jeep and at home like a portable unit. I used CB for a long time and would just be more comfortable to make the transition over a 10 meter radio than a hand held now after a few weeks I might look into hand held when the money is more available thanks. Also need to now of a club in the COLUMBIA SC area

Either the Uniden HR2600 or a Magnum 257HP.
The Uniden can only be found used; but parts are available. However, the Magnum 257 is in current production, has more power output, and is a pretty solid unit - IMO...

I think your best bet, if you really intend to use that ham license, is to get a 'real live' ham radio. There's just so many other bands that might be of interest. It'll also sort of 'nudge' you into upgrading to be able to use those other bands (it really isn't that hard). Why limit yourself to a single band radio?

and congratulations!

Budget is nice to know?

I use a Yaesu FT101EE for 10m, however, it isn't exactly portable.

Out of all 10m rigs, I like the RCI2950/2970. But, to each their own.

Personally, I advise getting a base, and throwing up a dipole. I made the mistake of putting up a vertical antenna..not a lot of hams use vertical polarity on 10m.

Although I can work mobile stations nicely?

Good luck, congratulations. =)

I would agree with Doc on what radio to get, there are alot of nice HF radios that you can get used for around the cost of a 2970 new and have all HF bands in one radio.... most all HF radios put out about 100 watts ,that is plenty of power to make contacts,I run a barefoot HF rig and have no trouble making contacts...

You of course will need a 20 amp power supply to run the radio at full output

And grats on getting your ham ticket!!

I like the HTX10 from radio shack. It tunes 10 meter in 1 khz steps, unlike most 10 meter cb radios.Makes a very nice little radio and can be had used for under 100 bucks. From time to time you will find a new in box unit for sale as well.

Oh no, not a TS-430S?

I paid 350$ shipped for mine with an FM board, no mic.

Already was opened up for full band TX and all the good mods.

If I had to give it up or my Icom 706MKIIG for HF, the Icom would go.

The Kenwood has less noise and better sensitivity on RX.

I didn't get a 440 because I feared the dreaded "dot disease".

move on up to something a little more sophisticated.

Maybe, I really like my 430's lack of sophistication for HF phone.

When I first got my general upgrade, I ran a 10 meter radio in the mobile. I didn't have the money at the time for an all band HF rig. A Ranger 2970DX is $400, but you can probably find a used Yaesu FT-857D for a few hundred dollars more and get access to VHF, UHF, and all HF. I know it seems expensive, but you really are getting a lot more for your money.

congrats on your ticket

you didn't mention any price range, soooo,.... look at the ICOM 7000. it will do just about anything you want to do.

here is a link to a local (to you) club Columbia, SC Amateur Radio Club ** Our Club call is W4CAE ** , it looks like they have a couple vhf and at least one uhf repeaper (oops ,... repeater:D).

You'd be hard push to beat either a kenwood ts50 second hand or an icom 706mk2g when it comes to price/portability/performance,both are equally at home mobile or homebase and look a damn sight nicer than any of yaesu's ugly small radios.

10 METER RADIO?

The ONLY "LEGAL" 10 meter radios I'm aware of that is 10 meter ONLY is the RADIO SHACK HTX-10 & HTX-100.The RANGER radios are ALL "ILLEGAL" & listed on the FCC list as ILLEGAL.For about $400 you can buy an all mode ICOM 706 ORIGINAL or an ALINCO HF mobile radio for $350 or so.Stay away from the RANGER & EXPORT radios if you want to be LEGAL.DON'T risk osing your new ticket by using EXPORT(ILLEGAL)radios on the ham bands.I know this is NOT popular but check the FCC website & see for yourself.PLENTY of HTX-10 & HTX-100 rigs for $100 or less if you look around. They look nice.

We had a 706 running our PSK31/RTTY station on field day.

Finals toasted after 10 minutes of operation.

I have yet to be convinced that Icom makes quality stuff.

No, that is not correct,
If you have your ham ticket, it is perfectly legal to use a 2950/2970 on 10/12 meters within the limits of your lic....this was already beat to death, and Sonwatcher sent a E Mail to the FCC and they confirmed that it is legal for licensed amateur to use these radios on the appropriate bands.
If you search the forum, you can find the FCC case number and what he was told by the FCC.
(on Edit, I went back and looked for the thread)

That is exactly where I was at. I noticed there are a lot of forums I have never heard of discussing this same matter with the same differing opinions. So at the beginning of the week I called the FCC and asked flat out if these radios, that are illegal to market in the US, are ok for licensed amateur operators to use on the amateur bands ? Today on my way home I called home and my wife said I had a message from a Diane from the FCC. She had told me she would get back to me after directing the question to someone in charge of Amateur Licensing. I got home just now and she has stated that an Amateur is allowed to use the Amateur portion of an export radio. So that settles the question for good with me.
If anyone would like to verify the answer you can call Diane at 877-480-3201 option #2. The case# for my question is #776635
