We do not use AM, FM is the regular in Europe. For SSB the amp has served well for many years with 20w peak power in giving 100-120 w peak out. For DX SSB work the conversation don't last that long. A "talker" on the superbowl would probably not have this combination with AM and see the 203 last...
The only thing I found a bit annoying with the Optima is the noise of the fan so i modified the radio some. I made the fan run all the time tx/rx at half of the speed in stead of high speed only tx with delay turn off. In addition I put a switch to the side of the radio so it can be turned off...
Both of the mentioned radios are fine quality. I would go with the one appealing most personally. I have both and use the 2950DX in the shack with ext speaker and RM 203 for SSB work. The Optima I use barefoot in my car and in xpeditions. The optima has no channel configuration as the 2950dx...
Looks like a really rugged built 5/8 wave antenna with excessive ground plane radials and not to mention the massive top hat. Slightly different impedance matching design than I have seen on others like Sigma Mantovas etc. Nothing feels better than a well built aluminum antenna.
Some thoughts...
I have been logging several stations from USA and Canada this weekend from the west coast of Norway. Have to start using 20CDX110 more. Several years since i have had cdx contacts
Im aware of the paint under the magnet mount, i hook of the mount and wax/polish the roof/paint every 2 weeks. Dont take any chances with rust even though the Subarus are galvanised:-)
Have someone tested the difference in performance between wilson 5000 mounted in chassie vs magnet mount. I just hesitate a little drilling holes in my 90.000$ car. I have been running wilson little wil for a while and want a little more reach. I have a 102 also but then its back to drilling...
We have a joke in Norway theese days. What do you call a person who dont get the swineflu?............Luckypig.......Luckypig is an expression of a very lucky person in Norway:-)
There are more people dying of ammonia, regular flu and getting cold, as soon as they combine any animal specie with the flu media and the whole world starts screaming:-)
Ill double this, i have 3 of the 29s, 50dx, 70dx, 95dx. Happy with them but after using my new Icom 7400(746) they are not the same. RX is a different world with DSP. 5 minutes with a soldering iron and you have a good rig from 0.15-60mhz with the IC-718. The difference in price arent that huge...

Hello DTB
This is also a standard Final in many european CEPT PR 27 radios. 40Channels 4w FM And some AM/FM. Usually tuned 4w deadkey FM and peak 4w AM. I have managed to tune some of the radios 5.3w deadkey and swinging 7-8w still having fine undistorted audio. But this Radios come original...
In Europe we also have some repeaters which opens at 10meter in FM mode.
Some thimes it is better range of FM than AM, it depends on the conditions. If you run 50w FM on a flat countryside you cant say its short range communnication. On 1w FM mode with a good antennasystem and good positions...
