Look at the louvered grille on the mic, the openings are only on the bottom. What I do is hold the mic so the the channel buttons are facing me, and speak down across the mic. The pffffts and ssszzsss will disappear.
I run the Sirio 5000 No shaft 3/8” antenna on a Sirio 3/8” 145 magnet mount. The mag is easily rebuildable, so I removed the RG58 it comes with and soldered on some RG-8x. I think it outperformes the Wilson 5000 it replaced.
This is my setup.
Could it be better? Absolutely.
but, I haven't noticed any major issues with it either. Everything seems to work as it should.
Pay no mind to that silly camo, it was the only color I could find in stock when I was ready to buy.
BTW, that little mag antenna that...
For temporary use, I have seen guys bond the hood to the body tub with wide ground straps to the firewall. Then, throw a mag mount for CB and or GMRS on the hood. Looks kinda silly for daily driving, but I imagine it would work pretty well on the trail.
I have an 86v and a 99v2 and I like them. About a 20min warm up to be stable on frequency. 99% of my time is on 11m so the 86v fits that perfect for me. After conversion, the 99v2 covers all the frequencies that you said you are looking for. The only downside to the 99v2 from the 86v is...
My DX86v clarifier does not slide the 10khz needed to make up for not having the 10khz switch. The five channels that the 10khz switch is used for still cannot be reached.
when in SSB mode, my 955 meter would peg and the radio would shut down completely. After letting two different shops try and fix it, it popped. It is now a $500 paperweight. AM worked, but the AM receive was either noisy or nonexistent. I bought it in 2013 and it lasted a month.
the 955...
my guess is it probably will hardly move much inside the house with a constant temp. All my setups are mobile. Also, that sixth digit 27.385x is just a guess.
it’ll move around about .5 khz for few minutes until it is warmed up.
On a cold morning vs fully warmed up it could move 1khz. After that, it seems pretty stable. I like mine. But to fair, these two Galaxy radios are my first SSB radios I have owned. Other than the Stryker 955 that I had...
The 99v2 in my picture is using the standard export mount included with it in the box, using long self tapping sheet metal screws. They are below the plastic console. They go through the carpet to the steel trans tunnel.
my truck is also an early 04 305 Cummins. I got some new reading to do now.
