I dont see why the fuss on "Detuning" a 98VHP? Setting up the 98 to do 6watts on low power is not detuning.
The reason I like this setup is that I can turn the power knob down to low and have the radio perfectly matched to the TS.
I could also swith off the TS, and turn the power knob all...
You also got to remember Turbo, I dont plan on running the amp all the time. So Im not really "wasting" my radio.
Once I get my DX1600, i am going to adjust my low power setting to around 6 watts or so, and possibly put in a 3db pad (whichever turns out to be better).
But, when I am not...
Well honestly I set my radio to CBtricks.com because it is a good source of info. Now, I am planning to run the radio at about 6 watts carrier on low once i get my TS next month. I realize now, that 65x4=260 which is way to high. The safe level would be 220PEP max on the 98VHP, which would...
Guys, I really hate to revive this thread, but I wanted to post here cause im pretty darned stoked...
I put the radio on the bench tonight.... and tuned it. DANG did that make a difference.
I used this for my reference:

I...
I will give the 98 a tune this weekend, and I am going to try and get a watergate... and maybe even a video watergate for you guys to check out and make sure my homework was correct~~
Thanks again!
Yeah, I gotta agree DTB... but i will have to say.. I have learned a metric crap ton of info from this thread.
So much so, that I have bought a Dosy 4002-PSW to learn with. I cant afford a Bird right now, but I am going to try and get one later on.
I think i may put the 98VHP on the bench and...
hmm... is it possible to put the 3db padding on a switch so that it can be turned off when not running the amp?
I am assuming the 3db would effectively take the 10w carrier and attenuate it to 5w? Am i correct?
I cant return it to myself :) I bought it from a distributor... I sell radios on my site.
But, I am not going to be able to do what I would like:
turn the amp off and run the radio at max power (200 watts PEP) for local talking
Or turn the amp on, turn the radios power down and use the amp for...
Ok, so in this example, if we put 10w carrier to the dx1600 we would get a 450w carrier out (taken from: http://www.firecommunications.com/dx1600.txt )
If we managed to get a 4:1 from the setup, that would in theory have the amp doing 1800 PEP (which we know is impossible).
So, with a 4w...
Ok. I think i am starting to see the big picture. So, if i were to input 10W carrier to the dx1600, I would get 450w carrier out. This would be a little higher than what I should run it at as the amp would be swinging around 1300 PEP. Ideally the amp should swing around 800-900 PEP to keep it...
So, in theory, it would be as simple as setting up the 98VHP to exactly as mentioned on CBtricks.com=
power knob on low = 10w carrier, with max modulation (which i am thinking would be about 30-40w PEP)
Then I could run the 98VHP on low power to drive the amp, and then when the amp is off, I...
So since the max inpupt wattage on a 2SC2879 is 10w PEP, I would not want to drive a Texas Star DX1600 (8 x 2SC2879) with more than 80w PEP correct?
Now, I am going to make an stab and say that good modulation would be 4x your carrier (at max modulation) So, a 20w carrier would be good.
Let me...
Ok... lemme ask a few more questions. I am looking at getting a bench setup for basic tinkering (on low end radios at first of course.. LOL)
What do you all think about this: http://www.dosy.com/products/tc4002psw.php
and how about some suggestions for some good beginners equipment? Dummy...
from what I was thinking, they tech could adjust the power on the 98 so that when the power knob is all the way down, it would do around a 4-8 watt DK, and swing 30 or so. Then with the knob all the way up I could do the normal max on the 98VHP.
This way I wouldnt be overdriving the TS when...
