I didn't say anything about code being required; just a recommendation about learning it. Why miss out on one of the skills that characterizes an amateur radio operator?

Is it practical to own a frequency counter?

Don't forget: things like freq counters, o'scopes and the like require periodic maintenance and CALIBRATION. Even a Simpson 260 VOM used to keep track of line voltages and such need these every six months, or whatever the manufacturer requires.

    help with SSB output

It matters in that your antenna is an unknown quantity in the mixture. Get a good, reliable 50 ohm dummy load that'll handle the power.

    Transmit pattern

Get a LARGE meter and a pair of good binoculars. I used a WW2(!!!) surplus milliammeter with some circuitry to make it work with eight D cells for power, testing a ten-meter homebrew yagi. Neighbor agreed to let me put it on top of his plastic mailbox for the few minutes it took to draw the...

    Varmint linear

Nothing wrong with "cw transmitters" as long as they're operated using CW on bands where such emission is legal. Lots of nice DX to be had there.

    Transmit pattern

After I upgraded from Novice to Conditional amateur license (and yes, that was several decades ago!) I borrowed a friend's SWR bridge just to see what my transmitter was looking at. I'd never failed to make a contact; might have taken two or three tries, but I had worked all states, all...

    What was your last meal??

Been itching for Thai curry for a couple of weeks, and there's an extremely good green curry at a reasonably accessible place here in Bremerton. Have to park a couple blocks away most of the time because of street repaving and such, but that green stuff makes up for it. I think they use the...

    Summer has arrived!!

I had to respond: AIRPLANE is one of my all-time favorites. During a perticularly hot Portland OR summer several years ago, when movie theaters were "pay once, stay as long as you want". Since it was a well-cooled theater I did just that. The second feature playing was "Monty Python and the...

Those rivets make me nervous, especially on aluminum. Should be stainless steel hardware, including lockwashers. IMHO, of course.

    dosy TC-4002PSW meter

This type of instrument generally gives an indication of reflected power but has no way of equating reflected power with SWR. You the end user has to massage the readings and see if you're being told straight stuff.

Easy: the heat sink is full. You're going to have to empty it and install new anti-heat compound (whenever it gets invented...).
