Depending on just how far north you are in "western" Wisconsin, you can probably get into the WX9MCS repeater system(s). Located in Rockford, Il... our 2 meter system is a VERY WIDE coverage repeater.. One of our members lives in Monroe, Wi. And has gotten into the repeater nearly full quieting...
While I rarely install antenna's at night. One of the techniques I like to use is after installing the antenna, don't connect it to a single thing... If possible don't even connect your coax to the antenna for about a week..

I'll backup the Wouxun KG-UV2D, I've owned mine for just over a year and no problems.. This radio has been in use every single day.. Granted I live in flat land country (Illinois). But I can reach Rockford's main two repeaters (1 is 2 meter, the other is a 70cm) from an average of 20-30 miles...
I'll stand behind the Wouxun HT as well, I've been using one for just about a year now and think its a great HT for the money spent...
Sure there are other "better" HT's out there.. With a heftier price tag on them... I have the KG-UV2D, I really have no complaints. Other than the reverse SMA...

I can say that the Puxing radio's are really good little radios, especially considering the price.. I paid about $70 for my PX-777+ and I am amazed at the quality, clarity, and range. Of course mileage varies and my experiences may not exactly be the norm, but I can talk on repeaters a good 20...
