Wow! How many months since my last post?! I've been very busy. Tested successfully for both Technician and General ham tickets the Fall of 2015, got the General license in October 2015, and finally got my SUV ready and a Yaesu FT100D installed and operational, as of two weeks ago. 14 on the air...
Sounds as if PGH is recovering from the horrendous steel mill crash from the 60s-2000. I went through there when the mills were dying. Mr. Rogers country. My second wife had friends in PGH, and either the husband or the wife knew Rogers from working with him at the tv station.
Howdy! :)
I finally got around to putting my replacement Wilson 1000 on my new MFJ-259C analyzer and adjusted it without cutting/grinding. It's all the way to the bottom of the hole! and could use a fraction more to perfect it, if I decide to do that later. For now I have the following test...
Still wrestling with the solar activity and skip up here in the NE CT hills. Not much happening here besides that. Even the truckers are pretty quiet. Everyone who does respond says my tweaked stock mic is doing fine, on this new 980. Can't run much mic gain or talkback with an external speaker...
Well, running my 980 barefoot, and with the way the skip has been stomping all local traffic around here, I can't even get out on SSB unless I'm sitting on top of someone. Besides that there's hardly anyone on CB/SSB any more. When the cell towers fall, CB will be popular again.
How's that 636 working out for you?
With the way that Snake Radio Customs (http://www.snakeradiocustoms.com/) tweaked my mic, my gain and clarity are all one could ask for without really needing a power mic. I like the way that he fixes and upgrades the factory stuff, even if it does void...
One thing that bothers me a lot about this new 980 is that the daytime lighting is no way bright enough if you're in a sunny area. It'll be interesting to see how the lighting is at night. I set daytime color on the brightest blue-white they had, then set brightness and contrast to 15. I still...
My new Uniden BC 980 SSB arrived today and I tried the mic. respondent said all clear and plenty of talk. the guy from whom I bought it yanked the noise silencer circuit to allow mic max gain. Modulation has also been tweaked and peaked on this 980. matched with a wilson 1000 magnet base coil...
Well! I'm back in the saddle again... not only did the Wilson 1000 arrive and pass testing with flying colors, yesterday, but today the Uniden BC 980 SSB arrived and is now loosely installed for some upcoming road testing. Snake Custom Radios has done a very good job setting this 980 up. My beef...
very interesting and good warning! Thanks for the tip. I'm verrrry 5W barefoot on 11M, with a new 20-24" Valor mag base antenna, and an old Cobra 19 DX III that I salvaged from a flea market. Funny that the antenna cost 6x the price of the $5 radio. pretty cool to be able to pick up old stuff...
THANK YOU, M0GVZ!!!! THAT is THE most informative response that I've received from anyone, including Wilson Antenna Co. I do have a MFJ-259C analyzer on backorder. I can hardly wait to try to learn the skills needed to use it wisely. Your comments are a BIG help in that direction. I'll look up...
Update today. I STILL have not been able to solve the SWR problem on my Santa Fe. I did get Wilson on the phone today. The customer service lady said to start cutting 1/4" at a time, and that the Engineer would call me back sometime. Well I"ve spent most of this evening cutting and adjusting...
This is great, having you to share ideas and testing info! Where are you located, if you don't mind me asking? I"m in Northeast Connecticut, USA.
That's great that you were able to lower your swr to more acceptable levels. You could buy another Wilson whip and keep that on hand. the 66" that I...
As one of you folks postulated previously, there may be quality control issues at play here. What I cannot figure out is whether the metallic glitter paint on my Santa Fe might be causing a poor capacitive ground by actually reacting with the magnet or reflecting the signal back to the antenna...
I hope you got your Wilson 1000 issues fixed by now! I'm new here, but have installed about half a dozen radios and antennae on various vehicles, over the decades. I have never had to cut an antenna.
I used to run a K40, but recently bought a Wilson 1000 and am having an awful time figuring out...
