Dual Band Mobile Rigs w/X-Band Repeat

So... I'm looking to replace the Yaesu FT-7800 in my wife's vehicle with one that does crossband repeat. If I can find a used FT8800 for a good price in Xenia this year, I'll snag one, but that may be kinda tough. I'd like to stick with something that operates similar to her current rig, since...

    Baofeng UV-21R/Pro HT

I picked up the R/Pro version of this radio a couple months ago. Overall, not a bad HT. Would like to find a thumbscrew for the battery, so I don't have to use a coin/tool/thumbnail to change it. 1000 memory channels, 2m/1.25m/70cm bands, color display (eh, not THAT good, since you can't read...

Talked to WalMart Today on a HT?

I've gotten more cashiers to their registers in the past. Just gotta say it with authority. :D

    Alternative to Channel 19

A Yaesu FT-857 would cover all those frequencies, or any other DC-to-Daylight radio. You can also get a quad band antenna that covers 10m, 6m, 2m, and 70cm, so tuning it a little different for 11m and the GMRS frequencies just above the Ham band should be doable. Would probably throw off the...

    coax

I really like R&L, their shop reminded me of an old time electronics shop last time we dropped in... years ago. Quicksilver used to come to our little hamfest, but he got too big and hasn't been there in years. Usually hires nice eye candy for Dayton. ABR is solid stuff, and they're proud of it.

    Anytone AT-6666 Replacement Electret Microphone

I lost count years ago. Between CB, Ham, FRS, GMRS, etc... It's bad. :)

    Alternative to Channel 19

Would be nice if there was some "gentleman's agreement" on which channel was used for what purpose, but for that to happen, there would have to be rational human beings.

What would be the reaction if Hams used 11m legally using their calls.

Should have been more clear, it used to be a 5 year license, and like $90'ish when I got my first one.

    Double Sideband

Sounds like the next step in a "super modulator" type setup. Suppress the carrier so less power is wasted on that, and just do mostly modulation.

    Alternative to Channel 19

Yeah, I don't ever try to work DX on 19. I'm on there to give drivers info (warned a driver about a broken down truck on a 2 lane road recently) or get info. Maybe the standards over in the EU aren't so bad, FM on some frequencies, AM on others? I just don't understand why everyone wants to...

    Alternative to Channel 19

Yeah, I knew of at least one trucker who's on the local linked repeaters in western NY. He used to sell the raffle tickets at our hamfest, haven't heard from him in a while, tho. I know bands are wide open now, and 10/11m will quiet up when the cycle dips again. All the people (or at least...

    Alternative to Channel 19

Since channel 19 has become a "DX" channel, is there any movement on picking another channel to use for truckers, or any of us who use it while traveling? Keeping the squelch up to 80% doesn't seem like a good solution.

What would be the reaction if Hams used 11m legally using their calls.

I've noticed that one of the local GMRS repeaters gets a decent amount of use, more than most of the Ham repeaters. Probably because there are only a few GMRS repeaters, and a TON of Ham repeaters. The people on it seem to be somewhere between CB and Ham radio as far as knowledge of radio...

Winter Field Day coming up Jan 27th -28

K2BWK was on the air Saturday and a little Sunday morning, 2H WNY. We're pretty casual operators, usually goofing off between contacts. :D
