I just picked up this radio. Everything works but no modulation. Throws a strong carrier. Weather channels come in good, squelch works & scans fine. I've tried another mic, it is not the antenna, running off a pwr supply that works on several other radios. Everything external checks out...
I've not heard of Tantalums causing hum. I'd check the surrounding Electrolytic caps for any that have dried out sufficiently to alter their properties. I imagine you/he have already examined the jumper cable going to the amp?
Taken from another site forum:
" I believe that the TRC-446 was made by Maxon, not Uniden. The TRC-446 is the same radio as the Maxon MCB-100WXD."
Lots of owners manuals for the Maxon but couldn't find svc manual or schematic.
Hi all. I'm replacing caps on this handheld. Some of the older caps in the radio are quite large but the new ones are 1/4 of the size. For example one is labeled Marcom CE04W 100uf 16V. The replacement is labeled United 100uf 16V. Now I have one that is larger but has 50V. Would it matter if I...
To be honest, I don't know what is wrong with it. I tested the diodes (Germanic) & replaced one. Replaced 2 capacitors, couldn't see any burned spots. It just stopped working.
Out of all my radios, (Realistic TRC-492 Navaho, TRC-453, Uniden PC68LTD, Uniden President Grant, 23ch Hi-Range 1 Hi-Gain) the Navaho & PC68LTD were purchased new by me. The rest I picked up here and there. I have no idea if any "Mods" were done to these radios but the covers had been removed...
Jeez, makes it hard to fix anything when published specs are wrong. Anyway last night I took the 42 out & put back the 2312 and now radio is working in degraded mode. Looks like the more caps I replace the better it gets.
The metal plate was blackened so I thought it was burned out. After I replaced it I bought a simple tester & it showed hFE=38, Uf=635mv. The TIP was listed as an alternate on the Alltransistors web site. We have one small electronics shop in town & he had the TIP42C so I thought I'd give it a try.
OK I replaced the c2312(TR538) with a TIP42C, replaced a dozen capacitors. I have audio for about 30 seconds then fades out to static. The LED signal strength lights do not light up any more for Tx but they do for Rx. More trouble shooting tomorrow & more cap replacements. I'll get this radio...
My citified wife thinks its unnecessary to stockpile anything. I've stockpiled ammo for everything I own. I try to keep 1/2 dozen jerries of fuel on hand, batteries, candles, water, couple boxes of IMPs, (MREs) etc.
If you're referring to the 2SA1012 transistor as a AM regulator, it appears OK. I've replaced 6 capacitors so far and nothing has changed. I'm going to get an ESR Transistor/Diode/Capacitor tester on Monday. I know it's an old radio but I'd rather not have to replace every capacitor, some are...
