I bought a Chinese 898s dual band mobile. A cheap Chinese mobile. And that’s what I get. I know. Anyway, my group tells me the signal is fine but the audio is very quiet. Even with the mic apart where there’s nothing blocking the element it’s still very low. I’ve not found a setting in the menu and I’ve not opened the radio yet.

So can you use an amplified mic on fm? I have always been under the impression that it’s not a thing since it’s all deviation and not modulation.

I have an icom that’s the exact same way. So not necessarily the Chinese but could be.

Deviation in a sense IS modulation. You CAN use an amplified mic on ANY mode as long as the levels are something the radio can handle without distortion. Be carefull that you do not exceed the proper deviation levels. As for the control, you need to find the FM DEVIATION control or perhaps it just has a single audio level control. Hard to say with the cheap Chinese rigs. BTW for decades Icom has been know for requiring high level audio input for decent modulation levels. Many folks replaced the stock mics only to find that audio dropped way down unless they cranked the gain control up.
