antenna question Doc?

Thinking about a dipole for a scanner. Since "The scanner isn't too picky about having a 'matched'

antenna." , Could I just use some twin lead split at the top with one side of the twin lead connected to the scanner center antenna connection and other side of twin lead to outter connection?

Mike,

Sure, why not? Or, you might try just a random length wire connected to the center pin of the antenna jack.

Now, a word about the 'not too picky' thing about a scanner's input. No, they really aren't that picky at all. But, naturally, if the input impedance of the antenna matches the receiver, things will work a little 'better'. That's fine if the frequencies you listen to are fairly close together. If they aren't, then you can figure on the antenna being non-resonant on at least some of those frequencies. Is that a big deal? Not really, considering the sensitivity of most scanners (way more than necessary).

With VHF/UHF listening the 'mainest' thing is antenna height. That will make the biggest difference in what you can hear.

Another thing about the 'pickyness' part. It only applies to receivers, not transmitters...

Thanks Doc. I just cant see myself paying $60 + on a omni RX antenna. For that kind of money I could make several different (VHF+) resonant dipoles, verticals or small beams. In the past I have hooked a I-max 2000 up to a old scanner and it seemed to work fine for RX on vhf and 440. Never had a 800MHz scanner so I guess I'll see how it works there when the scanner comes in.

Quote:
What kind of scanner are you getting, Mike?

I bought the two Bearcat BC-895XLT's from Bandaid Kid here on the forum.p067.ezboard.com/fworldwidecbradioclubfrm116.showMessage?topicID=915.topic

GREAT I look forward to playing with them when they get here. I rounded up a piece of 450 twin lead today. I'll try and string it up in the next few days and see how it works.

Quote:
Mike, the scanners can work just fine using an antenna connected directly to the back of the chassis

Hey Bandaid, you were not kidding. I havent had a chance to do anything with a antenna yet but did use a 6 inch wire wrapped around a coat hanger for a very temp set up and it hears everything I want to hear even way out here in the boonies. Thanks for the smooth deal and NICE scanners!
