From reading all the posts on this site it's obvious that everyones feeling is that the Cobra Sound Tracker radios are junk, and suffer from a lot of problems. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

Are the Sound Trackers the only ones that suffer from problems ?

What about the 29 Classic ? Is it still decent ?

What about the 29 Classic Night Watch WITH NO SOUND TRACKER ? Does the Night Watch feature raise any problems ?

Are the boards in the 29 Classic and 29 Classic NW (non-Sound Tracker) the same. <img src=http://home.comcast.net/~shockwav/smiley_155.gif ALT=":jmpnsmly">

The little transformer on the NW goes out and no one ever replaces them. Probably cheaper to replace the radio. You can get any of these 29s from truckers for under 50 bucks usually. All the front mic 29s and 25s are the ones made in china. They are plagued with cold solder joints. If you get one that hasnt been in the shop since you had it peaked and tuned then its probably ok. (a good tech will look for bad solder joints on the trace side and freshen em up) It could be a good radio for you. Its finding that shop that doesnt butcher up radios and takes the extra few minutes to give a quality job. Alot of "drivers" (especially Kenworth) like this radio because it fits in the little cubbyhole in the overhead and they dont have to install a jumperwire to an alternative location to hook up the mic.

My opinion, ok radio. Not great. Go buy a Uniden PC78XL and you wont have any regrets.

I had a older Cobra 29LTD w/soundtracker, I had it peaked and tuned by a local shop and ran a K40 magnetic mount antenna. That setup worked really good for me and I never had any problems with the radio.

I have since moved on and up to a General Lee :mrgreen: (and am working a a new antenna for it)

IMHO the Cobra 29 is a good starter radio.

I picked up an older cobra 29 WX classic (no sountracker) and had Justin do his 50 watt mod to it a while back. That radio is a screeeeaaaamer

Once the Cobra name left Dyna Corp behind they got cheap... They are definitely not the radio of years ago, but still a radio for the "Weekend" enthusiast or a kid just getting started into a hobbie...

With a little work on the inside... They can still be made into a fairly decent radio for the money IMO ...

I can still think of a bunch 'others that I would go with.

Actually the latest Cobra's are made by Giant instead of Maxon who been building them since Cobra Dropped Ranger in the 90's. The Giant built Cobra's actually perform better than the current Uniden's.

I suppose IM not in to fine dinning and wining ? (maybe whinning ) ......I have gone through a few Sound tracker radios (29s and 148s) ....they both tuned up nicely and I personally never had a problem with any of them ....weather they were made in Timbucktoo or Egypt ......Sound tracker only works one on one with another sound tracker radio(JUST A GIMMICK LIKE THE TOP GUN CRAP ON MAGNUMS) ...(oh yeah ,I've read what the cridicks had to say about the sideband side of the ST 148s .....strange I never had those problems ? ) this hobby really blows me away sometimes )-: .....it wasn't until these Forums and the internet when I really started to take a closer look at what was really going on with my equipment over the years ....I would just have the radios tuned to my amp of choice and just made sure I had the right SWRs to go along with the rest .....in 20 years time ...I have yet to burn up a amplifier .....and Lord knows I've had many of those ...never burnt up a radio either .......but now comes the Internet and folks talking about the right ways and the wrong ways with all this stuff ....whats good and whats bad when it comes to this and that ? ....Reflective power and that ,just because I have a great match through my antenna and amp don't mean doodle squat if I don't have some 500.00 antenna analizer on my system to get the whole truth and nothing but the truth out of my system !! )-: .....foowie !!! .......Well ,weather IM reflecting or not ? .....my junk works !!! ......and one thngs for sure .....I have met the enemy !!! ......it be me !!!! so if my crap works ? ...I really need not fix the stuff (-: .......and here I always thought of myself as a hardcore CB'er .....Boy was I kidding myself !!! .....all the watts that I read about on these forums that guys run has just spun my head around like Linda Blair on her period !! ....anyway .....as far as IM concerned ...when it comes to any radio ...there tends to be a lemmon in every bunch ......but if theres a will ....there's a way that there is a good chance that even the lemmons can be fixed ? ....Hmmm ? ...you ever been in a cb radio repair shop and looked around ? (that's if the let you in back of the shop) ...you will more then likely fine 100 radios back there piled on top of one another ? ......Hmmm ? I wonder way ? (-: IF IT WORKS ? DON'T FIX IT !! .....DONT MIND ME MUCH HERE FELLOWS ...IM JUST A RAMLING ON.

I like the Linda Blair mention. I think some of the tools of the trade make things easier. You can use tricks of the trade to get to almost the same point. What a fun hobby cb and ham radio is!!!

Using my "Secret Weasel" decoder ring I've found that
c=j
h=u
i=n
n=k
a-!

So, if you're tempted to buy a rig from China (Junk!), run away as fast as you can. If you can't run...drive. If you can't drive, have a friend drag you away. China's grand scheme is to overfill the landfills of the world with cheap crap that costs more to fix than replace.

Virtually everything made in China is crapparini. But tell me, what isn't manufactured in China these days? I mean, even if it says 'made in USA', there are probably a few components that have been manufactured in China. :x Yeah I know, there are a few things stll made here in the good 'ol US of A - but they're getting few and far between. I know I got off topic. Won't the new Stryker radios be manufactured in China???

Who put that wolf howling at the moon sig on here for me? I didn't do it. For someone to do that, wouldn't they have to have my log in info???
