I am a CBer, full and through, I Enjoy sitting on 27.395 lsb with a bunch of the guys and juts chatting, i enjoy staying away from channel 19 during the day because... ... well do i really need to say? (I mean i do live in NY somewhat near the city...) I enjoy ssb because its great to reach out further, and just chat, no fighting or arguing, civil discussions about what ever.

Becoming a ham (for 10m operation basically) has been on the back burner of my mind for a while. I have almost no money and this is probably whats kept me from doing it. But i often read on google when i am doing research on 10m that these CBers are encroaching on the 10m band. and these illegal dirty amplifiers are trashing the band.

Ive run a few different radios in the past, Like i said i enjoy ssb, so i have tried the hr-2510 the galaxy 95t2, the galaxy 9#9 series radios, a cobra 148 gtl, an rci 2950 and ive often had them backed by either a "fatboy", or a "bullet proof" Both put out a clean signal, dont splatter, and i am not broadcasting any channels up or down except where i want to be transmitting.

How come i am constintally hearing about these dirty amps that are trashing the band, when if i go 10khz up i dont hear what i was transmitting where i want to be....

Also, if im talking clean whats the problem with me running power on 11meters? it doesnt interfere.

The other thing is that a lot of these "export" radios are said to be splatter boxes as well, and while one talks at the higher CB freq's and running power they may bleed into the next band's lower frequencies. I havent seen this with any radio ive ever run. I have even talked to other ham operators on my "lowly" galaxy 95t2 and they told me it sounded great on their icom.

I personally have not experienced any of these problems i hear about...

the only way i see it being a problem is if some dude who doesnt know what hes doing hanges the "band" switch and thinks hes talking on a free channel 19.

I DO NOT MEAN TO START A WAR, OR ARGUMENT i am just looking for input on some of these "situations" for lack of a better word.

please if your going to insult or start anything refrain from posting.

Sorry, couldn't help it. If you look around there are at least 2 theads that are currently active that express the information that you are inquiring about.

I believe one has a dead horse being beaten and another is on the verge of being locked.

About the amps:

Most of the CB amps are Class C biased amps and they contain no output filtering for harmonics. That means that they put out signal on harmonic frequencies that is undesireable ie. 54Mhz, 81Mhz, etc. So you many not hear any signal a few KHz away from where you're operating but that doesn't mean it isn't there on another band.

The stuff you usually hear about "splattering" into the 10 meter band is usually a combination of poor radio modifications combined with power that cause a CB signal to splatter everywhere. Obviously this isn't everyone, but since you live near NY, I'm sure you occasionally hear some Channel 19 activity roll through that wipes out several channels. I know I do in L.A.

So it's one of those things were it's probably a minority of operators giving a lot of people a bad rap. But it does happen often enough that it is a concern to hams. The 10 meter radio issue is more about Export radios that can transmit on the lower portion of the 10 meter ham band. The unknowing operator gets one, rolls the channel selector up and starts talking where they don't belong. If you have a good 10 meter export like you said (2510, 2950, whatever) and want to use it on 10 meters when you get your license, then by all means do so. Just don't operate it with echo, roger beeps, and all the stuff that is fun to do on the CB band. And don't open it up and turn all the pots to the right so the thing is horribly over modulated.

ha ha, well thats all understandable, and i think that
"So it's one of those things were it's probably a minority of operators giving a lot of people a bad rap. " probably sums up ...

another thing is i find it how every one rips on galaxy radios.... i know a lot of the time its well deserved, but they can be pretty decent radios. The other day i had a lot of guys ask what radio i was talking on because it sounded so great.

Granted i had my radio worked on a little, (and done right) the 95t2 works pretty well, and often hams join us on our channels, and they have had nothing to say negative about the radio, not even the picky guys, No one liked the 959, or the Cobra148 though :-/

This all started because i went to look for info on using a 95t2 as a real ham radio, i know a ot of people say dont do it, but ... i have it.... And ive gotten nothing but flowers!

i am honestly just looking for answers and opinions here.

The troll is weak in this one.

All I am going to say is that for the most part people don't see a problem with their amps because they don't have two clues about what it is they are looking for in the first place and most of them don't know what clean audio is.The standards of Charlie CB'er or Hank ham are quite differant than Bob the broadcast engineer. BTW, you can call me Bob.

ok "bob" but do you honestly think all of the amps on 11m are dirty?

All? No. Not the ones that were built for other purposes and are being used on 11m, or the very few that were built decently for 11m. But there are very few of those out there. The vast majority of them are pretty "dirty"

No, i dont mean to make trouble.

Im on a bunch of the other forums and havent started anything.

I figured since their are a lot of hams here they might be able to help.

I just wanted to know why their is all this talk about CB guys up on .. or down on the ham frequencies, because honestly, i havent heard it, and when i have scanned the 10 i VERY rarley hear anything.

I Had ZERO intention of trying to start anything. Like i said the thought of becoming a ham is on the back burner of my mind.

Thanks for that. I mean i am not the a Cb tech by any means, all ive ever done was changed a lightbulb/filter, i know nothing about any of this, from what ive seen the 2 that i have looked clean, and have gotten me great reports from picky people, And this is why i didnt understand where this talk comes from. Because, anytime i research 10 meters on google, its stuff popping up about those dirty 11m amps. I appreciate the answer, and im glad to see that not everyone thinks its all of the amps.
