Octane Fuel Question??

First Question: Why is there three options for fuel octane at gas stations?

Second Question: I am getting a Second PCM for my truck and its being tuned for harder shifting etc...How and why would i need to bump up my Octane?:w00t:

note: i bought my truck used and it appears there is no rev limiter. it should be set at 3000-3500RPM but i am able to red line it in park or neutral so maybe my current pcm is tuned already but i am not sure how to check it? today i ran the truck till it was about to die and filled up with 91 Octane and wow my engine is very PEPPY.. Sorry about the silly questions but hey i have to ask and listen if i want to learn right?

To put it in layman terms. The higher the octane level is, then more compression, and later ignition timing you can have. If you change your powertrain control module, or reprogram it, then your ignition timing will will be retarded for better performance.

The more that your new computer or program retards your timing, the higher octane level you need. This is because the fuel/air mixture can spontaneously ignite just under the pressure of being compressed, and a higher octane level prevents that.

It is simply a way for auto manufacturers to run they kind of compression and timing on new cars that they could never have done before higher octane fuel was offered at the pump.

More horsepower, less emissions, more efficient engines.

octane

All cars & trucks have been engineered to run 87 octane I believe for many years now about the time they stopped selling leaded fuel. There is a anti knock module that allows this piss poor fuel to work. I have seen this module disconnected and it's God awful performance. I run Super in my motorcycle which is a 1900cc or 113 ci inch for better performance and is recommended by the manufacturer also. The higher the octane will create a better explosion when ignited under pressure thus creating more power.

Ok cause someone once told me once if I stuck 91 in my straight 6 4.2l my engine will throw a rod...

I just want my ride to last but also want to enjoy the benefit of this $230.00 tune.

I hope its worth what i am going to do i just feel like my truck is kinda granny... there is potential there for sure.

Running 91 octane in any car or truck will break nothing but the bank. Low octane fuel in a vehicle designed for 87 or 91 octane will cause poor performance, but not destroy the motor.

The octane level determines the combustibility of gasoline. The fuel becomes less flammable, which is a relative term when talking about gasoline, and more combustible. So it doesn't ignite before the engine computer wants it too. Modern engines rely on precision timing of the combustion to maintain a higher horsepower rating with lower emissions. The octane is what helps them do that.

To bad you guys have such low octane fuel over there. 91 octane is our $hit fuel,
Over here in aus our fuel ratings are (91,94"E10",95,98) and at some fuel station you can get 100RON but it is rare for pump fuel. The comment made about retarding ignition timeing to gain more power is false. The higher you can ignite the fuel to bottom top dead center on the power stroke in a 4 stroke engine will produce higher efficiency/power out. The higher the octane of the fuel enables the ignition point of the power stroke to be closer to the top of the cylinder producing power across the whole stroke also reduces detonation (pigging) enabling higher compression ratios to be used. I have a 4L turbo charged inline 6 in a ford falcon sedan that is tuned on 98RON it pushes close to 300KW/400HP at the wheels and feeding it really hits the wallet. I just wish we had the same fuel as the japs (107RON), push some more KWs :)

You silly foreigners measure your fuel octane levels differently than us normal people do.

Your ratings are in RON. Normal people measure their octane level like this:

RON+MON/2

Doing it the right way will consistently give you a number about 5 lower than your silly RON only method.

91 octane in your world is the same as 87 octane here

It's the next day and I have slept since then. You ever think one thing and say another?

Advance, not Retard.

I need a higher octane coffee.
