Howdy,

I have an 86V and a 2547 with similar problems. The 86V was sent to a tech for ssb transmit issues and came back with SSB receive issues. Works great on AM, but I like sideband, also, so Im not happy. The LSB receive is garbled. What can I do to fix this issue, besides sending it to another tech? Would this be due to frequencies being off or a filter being bad? I have a 1040 and 2040, frequency counter and o-scope and am learning the basics.

The 2547, I picked up as DOA and have it working on AM, but the ssb receive on it is worse than the 86V, plus its about deaf on ssb. So it has bigger issues on ssb receive than the 86V This radio has been a teaching lesson. It is going to need a couple of IF transformers repaired or replaced due to cracked slugs. It has had extra channels added, a 10k switch added and echo. So, the golden screwdriver was in it long before mine.

Any help would be appreciated!

Basically you need two radios, tx with radio #1 playing a 1khz tone from YouTube. Dial in the tx while listening on SDR. Then tx #1 and listen to radio #2 and dial in the receive. You should be able to tell when the frequency is the same because the warbling will go away and zero beat.
Thanks Shadetree, that makes since.. I have a QT40 I could use to zero beat the receive on the 86V.. It seems to be in frequency.. That would skip a step..

Ok, so if the ssb receive is off frequency, would that cause it to be unstable? I hooked it up to my antenna and could tune others in but their speech was sometimes understandable and sometimes not..

Can you adjust the clarifier on the 86v to keep them in tune? It's normal for a galaxy to drift on warm up. After about 20 minutes, it should be fairly stable. Then use the clarifier to tune them in. Do you end up with the clarifier maxed out? If it's still drifting at this point, sounds like something else is going on.
 
Unfortunately on SSB Galaxy radio's are known for drifting like a sailboat. On a base or in a warm climate they do settle down the longer the radio is on. In winter weather areas you will chase your clarifier like a dog chasing his tail.

That said I think you just need to get the hang of a dual clarifier. The 86V has both fine and coarse adjustments. The coarse part of the clarifier will really move the frequency, try to keep it at 12:00. Then use the fine to adjust your receive. Do you know if the clarifier is stock or has it been modified?

I have a few Galaxy radios, so I'm familiar with having to warm up Galaxies and the clarifier. This is a bit different. I can tune a station in and it is still not understandable. I don't know if the clarifier has been messed with. If we were talking about the 2547, Id probably say yes. On the 86V, Id say no. It looked like it was converted and peaked and tuned for AM when I got it. Sideband has never been right on it. I bought it used and basically got what I paid for. It's possible it could have a cold solder joint or a failed component. Did they ever put out a service manual for the 86V

Thanks! I think I printed a 979 service manual. I have one of those, too.. I'll double check though. I reread the thread you posted. I'll have to check the clarifier to see if it has been done that way and look to see if any of the limiters are cut. I do like the 10K switch. I dont know why Galaxy didnt do that to begin with... I have some things to look at for starters, so thats good.

Howdy, so I was able to tweak L22 against my QT40 to get it back close to frequency on LSB, then I tweaked L11 and L12 to get better receive.. So it’s working on sideband now, better… The meter has no movement on ssb receive, but that’s ok.. At least I can hear on lsb now.. It sounds good with a stock mic on lsb and it doesn’t appear to have the clarifier mod..
