I would like to get get licensed to operate amateur radio's. I'm new to this and would appreciate some help. I'm wondering if you can purchase books at the bookstore to study or if you have yo order them on line.

I live in northern Mn. (Duluth Area). I checked where I would have to go to test and there is nothing locally; will have to go down to the twin cites.

Thanks

ARRLWeb: Where Do I Start?

As to testing. Check around and see if there is a local Amateur Radio club near your area. I'm sure they have some qualified Volunteer Examineers (VE's) that would be happy to conduct an exam session for you once you are ready to test.

There are several online practice test sites available to help you hone your knowledge prior to testing.

I sent an email to the local club in Duluth Mn. This could be an expensive hobby. I have a CB and a 10 meter radio. When I pass the exam I suppose the next step is a base unit and antenna.

Thanks for the help. Looking forward to a new hobby and meeting new people.

Or mobile, or handheld :) There isn't one route or way to do this hobby. Start by asking other hams in the area to come and play with their equipment; have them show you how it works. Then you'll find out what you want to do. Your interests will probably change over time, also.

The "Now Your Talking" is a good book to order, if you want to go that route. Also feel free to ask questions here...there are quite a few helpful people here.
