ok what does HF stand for when sombody says they have an hf rig ??

I may be wrong about this, but i would assume that since...

VHF= Very High Frequency
UHF= Ultra High Frequency

Then...

HF= High Frequency.

Yep, HF= High Frequency. Those are the frequencies between 3 and 30 MHz.HF radios usually also cover the 160m band which is from 1.8-2.0 MHz and is technically MF or Medium Frequency. (300KHz-3.0 MHz)
