How do I acquire my grandfathers lic?

I know I need to take the test but where would I find out about how to take over my grandpa's HAM lic? He passed away in 96 and it still shows the lic is in his name. Thank you.

Depends on the call sign. Some are specified for Morse code users. Other requirements to call signs are the license level, such as tech/general/extra. So it depends on his/your Ham proficiency to be able to acquire that call. Another is the region that he lived in when he acquired his call.

Then, you would have to apply for a vanity call sign and go through that process.
Small fee along with it.
It can be done.

If his call is still active, then you may have to provide FCC with proof of his passing.As family you will get first dibbs. If it is a 1x2(w8ab), 2x1(wa8b), or 2x2(wa8bc) call, you need an extra class license to get it though.

What is the call sign? If he passed in 1996, unless someone is renewing the license, it should be available to a qualifying license class.

Pass the test for that level of better of callsign.

Apply using close relative stipulation.

Do not make any info including the callsign available on a radio site. If your grandfather's call is a good one someone will notify the FCC of his passing and grab it before you are eligible.

The call sign would have expired in 2006 and become available for anyone after the two year grace period. So the call has been available to anyone with the appropriate license class since 2008. Nothing special needed to have it assigned as a vanity call.

Yes-- don't post the callsign anywhere. If someone who has the appropriate class license wants it and gets it before you're ready there won't be anything you can do about it.

Every available call sign is available for anyone to view. I guarantee if it's a desireable vanity call, a 2x1 or a 1x2 it's already been viewed.

I already have the call o' my dreams. WD8T. My call was not yet available when I petitioned the FCC to release it and I wasn't related to the previous owner.

Right, but if someone has been thinking about that particular call but just hasn't done anything about it seeing a discussion about it could motivate him/her to get going on it. Granted, the chances of that may be small but if that particular callsign is that important I wouldn't take any chances.

There are hundreds of unavailable issued calls out there from those who passed away more than 2 years ago.

Callsign renewal lasts 10 years now.

Lots are not available yet because nobody goes around policing the call database.

There are cases where people find out someone has died and they notify the FCC of the demise of the holder. They time the notification with their vanity application. Happens all the time.
