OK, thats a AWESOME START. First off, i would do this. Get a davemade 1x4 base amp, cost, around $550. it will do 1000 watts maybe more, but not much more. Geta imax 2000 antenna, $80, then get you a nice 20 amp power supply $100, then get some lmr-400 coax, cant say how much it will cost, because i have no clue on how far you will be running it from your house and how far in the air you will be. OK, as far as radio go, Get a Ranger RCI 2950DX and send it to 8541 electronics, it will boom then. Get a Astatic Road Devil mic for the Ranger .

opps, looks like we went over here, DARN. Here is the key t otalking far. Get you antenan up as HIGH AS POSSIBLE, if you can get it 100 feet or even 150 feet, do it, but the higher you go up with your antenna, the better for local talking. You get a Imax 2000 up real high and get that ranger and power supply like i tel lyou with a 1x3 or 1x4 Davemade amp, you wil lbe so loud your town wil lbe calling you to please stop wakeing up the dead, I hope this gives you a little idea on what to get my friend,

For what he wants to use the station for, that base amp that 211 mentioned may be a bit much for him, especially in the city. Putting out a kilowatt with an amp like that is likely to get him all kinds of complaints from neighbors. In the transistor category, I would probably consider going with a smaller 2 pill base amp (2x2879's). That should be more than plenty for local talk. Or if more power is desired, a used tube amp like an Ameritron AL-811 can be found for around the same price as that Davemade and will be much, much less trouble to your neighbors and yourself.

Also, I love the Astatic Road Devil mics, but I don't think I'd want one on my base station, as there's not much need for noise cancelling at home. Any of the other other D104 hand mics would sound great on that rig. You could also go with a desk mic, if you want.

Just my 2 cents.

Use a 50' push up mast. They're under $100. You can put it up a couple ways: make a concrete footer to make it self supporting, or use guy wires on your roof or in your yard to hold it up. I have a 50' push up mast that is extended 30' on top of my roof with guy rope supporting it. Now, you probably will have to get some help pushing that beast up, but once it's up, you really shouldn't have to mess with it unless you want to change antennas or coax. For a vertical antenna, that's all you really need. Here's a pic of what mine looks like on the roof:

If you want, you can go to radio shack and get a push up pole real cheap, or you can go to a local welder and ask him to build you a brake over pole of your choice of hight.

I bought that mast...it's a Rohn. But like 211 said, you can get them at radio shack. I'm not sure how big of a concrete footer you would need to make it free standing. I bet if you made it it 3' x 3' x 5' deep, it would be OK. Maybe someone else has tried this here.

Yeah, that's an Interceptor 10K. Great antenna......

I live very close (1500 feet) to a major interstate highway. I would like to be of assistance to travelers and professional drivers as they pass through our city. Therefore, I want to establish a base station to monitor and communicate with those who use that interstate.

I need some help in selecting the correct equipment. I'd like to have a station that has some punch in its output, but I am not looking to reach Mars, if you know what I mean. I also am interested in a system that might permit channel scanning. Of course, your help with suggestions regarding an antenna, microphone, amplification, base unit, wiring, etc, would be most appreciated.

I will thank you in advance for your help.

Who do you hire to climb that tree, HMMMMMMMMMMM?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

The RadioShack push up poles run around $70bucks and extend 36'.

Where does one find the 50'ers?

Guy line; I'd use the good UV resistant Dacron rope, you can find it at www.davisrf.com This way you won't have to use insulators as used with metal guy line.

Make sure EVERYTHING (all the radio related quipment) is grounded well to an 8' ground rod outsid the nearest window (shortest run possible). Also ground the antenna from base of antenna to a ground rod at the base of the push up pole.

.

Good luck, Hossless
