not sure about canada, but I just found out it is illeagle to have a scanner in new york. Now, I fully intend to install the scanner I just baught on ebay. I think this law is pretty stupid. What do you guys think, if by some chance I ge pulled over for speeding (very hard thing to do in my lifted truck) is a cop gonna glance at my scanner, and arrest me...Thats rediculous!!

Having a scanner in your vehicle in Canada is legal.It is illegal however to use one to circumvent the law or while committing a crime.

not sure about canada..
i have heard it is legal..

in ny it is legal to carry a scanner..
if you are licenced properly from FCC (such as having a ham licence)..

I live in both nj as well as ny..
and believe me when i say the cops in G.C. and in the Hamptoms are out to get you any way they can..
they surly do not like it...but it is legal if you are a ham operator...

state law does not over ride federal law..
i purposly try to push buttons in G.C. and in the hamptoms to let some dummy try to tell me otherwise..

In today's world if the police do not want you to listen just scramble the signal (old world ) or go digital on the system(new world) and most listners will be out of luck you could also go to a astro digital trunking system for real security around my home county they use digital frequency hopping radios. Ya got to ask what are they trying to hide?

That's great to know that you've successfully fought the law regarding the NY scanner laws. It looks like the last sentence of the law say the prohibition of a scanner in your vehicle does not apply if you are a licensed ham. Can you provide more details about the original charge and what you did to defend yourself?
