More info

First of all, Wire Weasel was pulling your leg.
You are trying to learn tube RF amplification; that could take awhile.
It might be simpler to take it to a qualified repairman closest to you for faster results- IMO...

I know the risk

Do you know anything about electronics in general or about the operation of tubes specifically? An older edition (30 years or older) of the ARRL Handbook has a lot of good info about tube operation and for some heavier reading the book The Care and Feeding of Power Grid Tubes which was put out by Eimac/Varian. Other than that a basic background in electronics is extremely recommended. Usually most amp problems can be traced down to either blown/shorted tubes or power supply issues, either in the plate supply or bias or screen supplies if the amp has them. Of course there is always the occasional charred and unrecognizable component that needs to be ID'ed and then replaced and then the cause of it's demise determined.
