RF Gain?

Generally, the rf gain increases the receiver sensitivity to pick up weaker signals. If you turn gain down you will only hear the stronger, nearer signals-if you turn it up you will hear weaker, more distant radio signals. Most people keep gain high especially when trying to talk skip.

Most of the time people keep the RF Gain turned all the way up

However if you turn it down...
Basicly it is like a atenuator....Allowing/Enabling Stronger signals though while making it much harder for weaker signals though

it is not a true atenuator...but basiclly works as such

Where it gets a lot of use is, when talking to nearby stations you can turn the RF gain down a bit and reduce the hiss and background noise and still hear the local guy. But, when you turn it down, you are giving up sensitivity so you m ight miss stations that are further off. Kind of a trade-off.
