You can, but the real question is, is it worth it.
If it is working now there is no reason to tear into it and change transistors for a Gain that no one will ever see on the other end.
If you need more output it is better to sell it and buy a bigger amp.
And if it does have a blown pill replace it with what is in there now. As a general rule you are never ahead by trying to swap in a 2879. It can be done but it is not a direct drop in swap. There are other things that need to be changed and modified.
The other issue is I think the Skipper line has the smaller size MRF finals. This means that the slot or hole in the board that holds the final is too small for a 2290 and 2879.
