I personaly have never run one but have talked to many stations that run them, either the HC-4 or HC-5, and you can tell almost the instant that someone calls you that they are running a Heil microphone. They seem to have a sound of their own and the sound is great. Many times I have asked if they are running a Heil and the response is usually "Well yes.How did you know?" I have a good ear for sound quality,I am a broadcast engineer, and I think that the Heil mics are really good. The only reason that I don't run one is that I took a more elaborate approach and use a D-104SE with an equalizer and outboard speech processor.

Thanks for the response. I've read that they are supposed to be an excellent unit. I am always looking for ways to make my set-up sound better/cleaner and I've seen these microphones in the magazines. I wasn't sure if they would live up to the advertisements claims or not.
I like my Turner+3B with my old HR-2510 ,but , I might start looking at the hamfests for a Heil if they are that good.
The 5 element is the good sounding one. The 4-element is designed to get you through the hash but not the sound of the 5-element. So if you're looking for good sound go for the 5. If you're wanting to just get through all the noise to be heard go with the 4.
There are sound "samples" on his site to give you an idea. www.heilsound.com/
Good info here guys. Now for a little information on preferences between the wide & narrow settings. Which setting do those of you who are using or have heard these in use prefer? I currently have a a MC-60 desk mic on a TS-430S. What would be involved in replacing the element in the MC-60 and would it really improve the audio on SSB of the TS-430S? I've never really looked at my MC-60 to determine how difficult it would be to get it apart to make this modification.
Thanks!!

Quote:
But the Heil iCM for Icom's is a total rip-off.

Thanks for the info Dave. I've been looking for a mic for my IC-251 and I just had a funny feeling about the Heil's for Icoms. I tried a Turner +3 desk mic but if I turn it down low enough for good clean (actually GREAT sounding)audio, It dosent drive the radio enough. If I turn up the mic gain to where it drives the radio to a full 10-12W PEP the audio is horriable. Since The older Icom's have the goofy pre-amp in the mic set up, I think I'll just find a mic. that was built for them. I've heard a few Icom SM-20's on the air and they sound really nice.
