I'm a brand new owner of two Yaesu FT-1D HTs and love the radio for the most part. I won't get into a full review of the pros cons in this thread but wanted to quickly address a few of the issues I've been experiencing. My hope is to raise awareness of these few early bugs so that Yaesu can fix them for the next batch of FT1D owners and hopefully expedite adoption of their new protocol.
If anyone else has experienced this or has any insights, would love to know!
First problem is an error I'm getting when trying to program VFO items into memory from the HT. I made a video of this on YouTube with a relatively solid overview of the issue. (While I typically use RT Systems for all of my programming, when traveling sometimes I need to program via the HT and this has been impossible).
The second problem comes when transmitting DTMF codes. If you're using DTMF on a channel with a PL tone(simplex or repeater) then you'll hear a buzzing as you key the DTMF. If you don't use a PL tone then this doesn't happen and it functions as normal. Yaesu tech support has advised that this causes no problem with the DTMF being transmitted and is only an awkward side effect but I sent one of my HTs in to them for their approved repair of the issue and will keep you guys posted on the results.
Aside from these two problems, I personally love the HTs and highly recommend them. To me its a combination of all of the best things about Yaesu and some future looking features all in one HT.
I do hope they will expand on the SD card capabilities (I owned Icom products for years and both ID51 and ID31s provide far greater feature sets on their SD card implementation) since presently it can only really be used to backup/restore the entire HT and not save different configuration profiles etc....
Look forward to my fellow hams thoughts/comments.
