10 M mobile radio with good receive

I'm looking for suggestions on a good 10 M SSB mobile rig. Someone just gave me an older magnum 257 with the blue display but the receive is terrible. You pick up so much white noise and alternator noise that it makes the radio useless. I met a friend for dinner we were trying to talk on the radio while driving to dinner which was impossible. On the interstate I picked up my alternator noise and everyone elses too. Not to mention the white noise. I was looking into the rci 2950 but I've been reading several online reviews which state that the 2950 is just as bad for the noise as the Magnum. I would appreciate any comments on the 2950 or other suitable 10 M SSB mobile. I'm not into all the toys. I never run echo or anything like that. Thanks Aggie
 

I used the 257 and the Galaxy 99V while driving cross country last year. They are both just as noisy until you turn on the noise blanketers. Either one will work fine when you kick that on. Both have great receives.

It also depends on the car you have; I use a '08 Honda CR-V that is pretty quiet electrically and acoustically. . .
 
The RCI 2950DX are noisey and can be made better with the Schottkey diode swap but the orange face 2950 or 2970 radios had great quiet receive. If you hear alternator whine and the NB/ANL does not fix it then you are most of the time fighting a losing battle as some would say.

The receive issue on the RCI DX models was an indeed major issue I havent messed with the latest models as of yet so I can say anything about them but would like to hear someone with experience with that models comments or input.
 
I've had two other radios a cobra 19 ltd II and a midland 5001z there was little to no noise on either of these radios. The recieve was great on both radios. I liked both radios but I really missed the SSB. I turned on the NB on the 257 which did help but the noise is still intollerable. Thanks for your help.
 
I even have one of the Sommerkamp TS-200 /2950 and that one also has excellent receive its just an isssue with these DX models when they were made but as I said the older orange face Mirage RCI and Sommerkamp model 2950 were fine.

Another good choice would be the Uniden HR-2510 or HR-2600 also great ears and SSB talkers.

I never had any issues with any of my dx's
 
I have a DX and mine is ok aswell but it had the schottkey diodes installed when I purchased it but I had seen people saying how they had issues with these DX models and there receive which is why I brought this up to the poster.

Mack Im actually glad you chimed in if you have the DX model and have no issues then maybe it was a bad run or luck of the draw to get one with the receive issue maybe there are others that can shed some more light on this.

I like my 2950DX its a nice dual band radio and the display on the lowest brightness setting is perfect which saves on the bulbs. All in all mines a nice radio but I do notice that my older models are a bit quieter as far as a noise floor.

I will have to take a saturday and run them all one after the other to really see how much of a difference there really is.
 
I had an older 2950 and it wasn't really that bad. I went out to rat shack an bought those snap on chokes and put one on the ground an the hot wire going to radio. Seemed to clear a lot of the noise up but it was pretty tolerable to begin with. Another thing to make sure is, GROUND, GROUND GROUND! Did I mention GROUND? LOL
 
Should I run a ground wire from a screw on the back of the radio to something metal underneath the dash?
 
the best radio for receiving will start with the best antenna setup
if not your best radio wont even be able to recieve a obama stash

The Wilson 5000 is my antenna
