And that's why Bell's is part of the problem. Thanks DXman for getting your post in on this matter. Nuff said.

imo i think the 11 meters should be allowed to run the same power as hams use after all the 11 meters was not always a free band and i mean really why does it matter so much as to what a cber runs as power lets say you take a dirty box and run it on ham bands its gonna splatter just as bad as if it was on cb band so if a cber used clean power just like most hams use then there would be less splatter lets face it most people on cb band don't want to cause trouble they just want to get out around the world and do it on 11 meters hell if the fcc would make a safety class to be able to run nice power on 11 meters there would be less people braking the law and by safety class i mean one just on how to safely use amps on 11 meters then more radio sales and prices wouldn't be so high more people would be into it win win

It will never happen, The CB band is a thorn in the side of the FCC and they have been beat down many times in court over it.
They will never relax the rules despite many attempts to do so.
The only option is to go outside the rules and risk fines, or just get you ticket and move to legal op`s on ten meters.
Ten meters shares the same propagation effects as 11 meters and you have much more room, many more modes to use and do not have to worry about fines.
Most hard core guys running CB are already buying ten meter rigs, so to say that cost is prohibitive is not an issue.
The antennas are virtually the same.
Morse is no longer required to pass the test.
A couple of weeks of casual study will get you the General Lic and you are free to play.
Ten is a fun band, there is so much room up there that you can wind the VFO around and around for days.
SSB, AM on the AM sub band, FM and FM repeaters at the top of the band.

I think If you were to call Bells, and talk to screwdriver he will tell you it is not a good idea to run the N-2 radios at 100% output at high duty cycles.
Yes turned all the way up 200/250 on a bird with a peak kit, remember what that is on a average reading watt meter and it is not that astounding.
I wish everyone would stop using the term RMS but we have beat that on to death and no body gets it so we are stuck with it.
If they were to put a Amp meter inline I am willing to bet that the radio is not drawing 50 amps.
As Larry has said, the radios when set up properly they will run on a 35 amp power supply.
Another thing to think about is the life of the radio and stress caused by heat.
Look at the size of the heat sink used for the amp section.
Even with the micro fans, it is still very small, and it soaks the radio chassis with heat when run at high duty cycles with the power run up high.
Things last longer if you don`t run them balls to the wall all the time, that is just a fact when it comes to a lot of things.

both peak and rms meters Ranger RCI-2970N2 Tune-up Report - YouTube and i agree you dont run anything balls to the wall all the time that's why you have a variable power and if you want to be extra careful you put a switch on the amp so your not running it all the time

Your right Jeff and that's why I have mine raised up 2" on the desk, so I can keep a fan going across the heat sink.
I do this with all my 2970dx's also and that's probably why they are pretty much trouble free - keep them cool!!

I run a N2 in my F250 Power Stroke that has dual batteries with a 200Amp HD Alternator. Brand new out of the box the N2 would dim my Head Lights & dash lights. It would run very HOT & the output was over 300!! The Bias was set to high from the factory I believe.

It finally died, I sent it back to Ranger it came back to me with new mosfets & a good alignment. It runs COOL in all modes and doesn't dim the truck lights and it puts out a good 200/225 all day long. That was over 2 years ago so far so good.

Also forgot to mention this will be my 3rd N2 I have owned. This last N2 has been the best one since being repaired. The other 2 were turds.

Great replys everyone. Anyone using the newer n2 with the monochrome display ? Is there any differences between the n2 w/ standard display vs the black background with green numbers.

My first two N2's were regular green back ground with black numbers and my current one is the newer black back ground with green numbers.
Did I say that right??? LOL! It's 2:30AM I can't sleep.

I don't think there is any difference between the two displays. I do like the newer green numbers on black back ground its easy on the eyes in sunlight & at night.
I Wish my 20 year old Galaxy Saturn Turbo could be retro fitted with a N2 display that would be nice!

Thanks cbrm. When I pick up a 2970n2 I'll make sure my output is 200 Watts ± SSB. I really have no desire to use chicken band so maybe I can sell the echip supplied with the radio ?

It's your money but I have to ask. Why would you put that kind of money into a 10/12m only rig rather than adding a little bit more for a regular HF all band radio especially if you do not care about the CB band. The difference between 100 watts and 200 watts will not hardly be noticed on the air but the quality of that 100 watts will be.

Just thought 200w was worth it for 10m but ur right I could just spend a few shillings more and get a allmode ham rig with 100w out

If your hungry for power (who isn't) don't want to run a separate amp and have $$$... R & R Communications can set you up with a custom brand new warranted 2970C4. That's a new 2970N2 with a RCI69FFC4 4 pill amp board in place of the standard 8 MOSFET's. Oh boy-O-boy.

An operator in the area has one in his mobile and he doesn't fade out for miles and miles *Don`t do it*
