Picked up a cobra 29 LTD, problem I'm
having is that swr as far as checking it
doesn't work, so i hooked up my personal
meter and it doesn't let me cal. or anything else for
that matter, it does show the wattage that it's putting out
on my meter, but the SWR is a no go...shouldn't my meter
work even if the radios swr doesn't.thanks for any reply s:bdh:

What kind of SWR meter are you using? One with Forward/Reverse setting with forward calibration, or a cross meter using two meters across from each other: where one shows forward power and the other shows reflected power, and the SWR is shown where the needles cross?

Oh, yes the external meter should work if the built-in meter doesn't work. It's possible that your SWR is low enough that it doesn't show. That would be if the SWR was 1.0:1, or 1:1. To test this (if you haven't already done so) just take a reading at the lowest frequency you can work and at the highest frequency you can work, and see if there are any readings there.

I'm using a Swan W2-6200... Mike it's not even letting me calibrate it,
should move the needle when calibrating it Right? at least that's always
been my experience, hooked up another meter same result have never
experienced anything like this. connections are good, so I'm baffled...
Hmmmm.

When you say that it won't let you calibrate should I assume that you mean that the needle moves but not enough to acheive the calibration mark?
Or are you saying that the needle does not move at all.

Does not move at all....

Not eveyone might be familiar with your wattmeter.
I tried to look it up on the net and could not find anything about W2-6200.
Does your SWR meter have a FWD (forward) and REV or REF (reverse or reflected) switch on it?

It will read watts but will not move the needle when you have it on swr mode and the switch is set to 'forward' and the calibrate control is set max clockwise?

I do appreciate all your reply's. yes on the FWD/REF I have been
a cb'er for many many years, and never came across this problem
as far as dead key watts, it doesn't show the wattage (10 watts)
until i talk into the mic, that's not making sense either, I know SSB
you have to talk into mic to show wattage out-put, but shouldn't
it show wattage on AM buy just keying down the mic? I think this
radio has had one too many golden screw drivers in it. oh well it does
work the antenna warning light isn't going on, so will just leave it alone.
thank you all, for your time and help.
73's your way.
Here's a picture of the swan meter.....

The line section in a VHF meter is shorter than one in a HF meter and will be less sensitive at HF frequencies.
Maybe the dead key in the radio has been turned way down and it has a swing kit in it.
I would think that there should be enough response to get the needle to move when in forward set.
You said that you had another watt/swr meter and it exhibited the same symptoms.............maybe you could advise me as to what kind/model it is.
Something here still does not make sense.

SWR

works on my 2510 11/10 meter
no problem swr/power.
and as i mentioned the radios
swr meter doesn't work at all,
and that's why i hooked it up to and
external meter... this meter (swan)
works on all my HF rigs....thanks for
your reply....

Somewhat of a puzzler.
The only thing I can think of is the carrier is turned way down.
Or there is something wrong with the radio.

SWR

Your guess as is as good as mine Radiooman
just the fact it doesn't work (SWR) on the radio
is a indicator, it seems to transmit and receive OK
could use a better mic (Hint) that's why i threw it out
there, it was a first for me, I will have to take a look-see
and see what i find... anyone selling a power mic, please let me know
thanks again....
