I have a Uniden Bearcat ssb/am hooked to a dipole 20 feet in the air. I find it hard to skip out on this set up. It is probably directional on which way the radial wires are facing. I have them at 45 degrees apart and attached to grey electrical pvc. Any comments would be appreciated. Can this radio be opened up a little for modulation. My swr 's are very good around 1.1 to 1.3. I have a new sirio gpe27 but do not have it up as of yet for the mast is on it's way to put it up 53 feet.

Put a bump to the ALC 203 pot. Will bump the mod up quite a bit from stock. I believe you will have to turn it counter clockwise. Go easy and be nice to those pots. Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 turn at most. When prop is rollin' you will have no problem getting out with that radio. Good luck.

Down load this tone generator app to your Phone http://www.androidblip.com/android-apps/justo.jimenez.generadoraudio.html hook up a watt meter in your out put line, put the radio on SSB start the Tone generator app put the mic near the speaker to get the signal into the radio, make sure that the Mic gain is full open key the mic and adj pot 203 to get the highest signal on the meter then back it off just a little until you see the needle begin to drop. Close up the radio. '73 's 2 CT 093

Dipoles are directional. If the wires are pointing north/south the signal will be going east/west.

Mine out of the box was under powered and undermodulated. Follow the tips here and it will help boost your signal. Ultimately it is Mother Nature that will be your best contributor to skip ! ! That radio is solid......just not very modifiable for frequencies, which is why mine sits sidelined most of the time.

I do not want to modify the frequencies but stay legal in that area but possibly bring the modulation up. That seems to be pretty easy. I like the radio okay but wish the rf gain was just a turn knob instead of going through the way you have to in order to adjust the gain. There are probably better radios out there but these have high ratings for quality. Only time will tell. Thankyou for the reply along with all the others whom have offered advice.

I do wish it was more modifiable for channels sometimes. My experience with this box has been really good. Cheap as all get out for a new radio, spot on frequency out of the box and I get slammin' reports on the audio using the Ranger SRA-198 NC mic. Gain set to max. Something about that mic and radio combo. Dunno....Just sounds awesome. Plus, if an attempt is made to carjack you while sitting at a light, you could hit someone with that mic and take their head clean off. It's a weapon!

I opened my Bearcat and raised the modulation level using a modulation meter. Put it at around 80-90 percent according to the meter. Raised the AM level from around 2.5 watts to 4 watts. Checked SSB output and it was around 8 watts pep. Raised it to 10-12 watts pep. Connected it to my diy Moxon horizontal beam and made some good contacts from Idaho to S. California, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Alaska. Contacts were barefoot. Also used a diy vertical 1/4 wave antenna and made several good contacts with it also. Skip contacts were SSB. I have a Turner +3 mic on the Bearcat. Reports say I am loud when the conditions are good.
