Cobra 148 GTL-DX

I own a Cobra 148 GTL-DX.
I just left an auction site where they had 2 Cobra 148 F GTL's for sale. Besides the differences in the front panel controls (push buttons) and the freq. counter are there major differences between these units ? Also I've read that where the radios are built has something to do with how well the radio operates. My 148GTL-DX has Taiwan stamped on the rear chassis but I've read that some are built in Malaysia and some in the Phillipines too.. What's the difference ??? :?

You might have the Export version, dual finals with a heat sink on the back, 12 bands of channels and FM as well.

I hate to burst your bubble but that Cobra 148 DX you have is junk,,,,,send it to me I will "dispose" of it for you :D

your 148dx is a 148 in name only, its a relabeled superstar 360.

it has its advantages over a standard 148 gtl in its ability to cover more frequencys and have more modes of transmission.

as far as using it as a cb i would rather have a 148 gtl as its reciever is far superior.

the 148gtl dx and superstar 360fm came with at least 4 board versions,
pc879aa
pc879ab
pb010aa
pb010ab

the 879's were called 5 crystal here and the 010's were called 3 crystal

the 3 crystals were by far the most popular ssb /fm radio back in the 80's in the uk if you could get your hands on one,
the 5 crystal was good on ssb but the fm rx was not as good,
very clean unbutchered ones still bring good money, one sold recently on ebay for £152+shipping,
when the superstar 3900 came out it all went downhill from there as far as 99% of people over here are concerned,

i always prefered the grant export for its better fm receive.

Ok, the one i had was a Cobra 148 GTL DX+ which had a heat sink, dual finals, 12 bands, FM and so on. Built like a Connex 4800 without echo.

sorry Carl, I was laughing so hard at Hamer's dispose of it reply that I mis-read that you said the 148 has better receive. I haven't opened this radio at all..I think I'll look inside and see exactly what I have..okay I have the PB-010AB board. I think it has the M145106 chip and there's two others M14008 (I believe) all near the channel selector on the board...cw, fm, am, usb, lsb...hi, mid, low, on the front panel

The Cobra 148 GTL DX radios were in and out of production several years before superstar/Galaxy/Connex were even a thought.

you on crack, the superstar 360 was around long before the 148 dx. thats what it was.

   Switch Kit, I was just looking..I didn't have the "golden screwdriver" in my hand    I've read that this radio had the MB 8719 chip and how versatile it is..then when I looked inside mine I found a different chip and I wonder how versatile it is compared to the 8719... I'm trying to learn as much as possible about this rig.

73's to all and the fine families

there has been both superstar and cobra 148's in all models of the breed from the 40ch usa AM/SSB units through the 120ch AM/SSB units to the several versions of all mode dx models both 8719 and 145106 pll's,
all models may not have been sold in the usa but they made there way over here from somewhere,
the superstar 3900 is where it all went tits up,
you aint been around long have ya psycho
