I thought I had done the clarifier unlock the other year on the Uniden 980 SSB, but I must be thinking of some other radio I had. I did follow the youtube video on how to go about it, but I skipped the step on the diode to try and give the radio more slide. I left that part alone. This the board revision that I have. (Assuming its one of the first older revisions of the 980 SSB.)

Uniden 980 SSB Clarifier Unlock 2.jpgI just clipped it part ways up so I can just solder a wire to it. This wire will need to go to a 8v source underneath the radio. This pin is the one you want for 8v.

Once you are done doing that, you can go ahead and clip the white jumper wire next to the small potentiometer. (You can probably clip either white jumper wires and still get the very same result. I clipped the 2nd one to see if any change happened after I clipped the 1st white jumper wire, but didn't do anything.)

That should be it. My centering on the Coarse is a bit off counter-clockwise, but I won't lose any sleep over it. I am sure one can do more adjustments inside the radio so the knobs are in the center. That I will leave up to you to see what areas need to be adjusted.

I am unsure how the newer revision boards are different for the clarifier unlock as I don't have one of the newer ones. If someday I happen to acquire one, I will look into that.

Hope this helps. Thanks for reading this quick guide.

Great info! The clarifier mod iscthe only mod I would do on any radio. Only because so many people are off frequency, it gives me a baseline.
